Many people choose to sleep in full clothes. However, did you know that sleeping naked has health benefits?
What are the health benefits of sleeping naked?
1. Sleep better
Your body temperature will decrease during sleep at night. In theory, lowering your body temperature at night will help speed up the production of the deep sleep hormone (melatonin) while temporarily lowering the level of cortisol (the stress hormone) in your body. As soon as morning approaches, your body temperature and cortisol will rise again to prepare you for an energy surge when you wake up in the morning.
However, this process can be interrupted by the increased body heat caused by wearing layers of cloth while sleeping — from underwear, shorts or lengths, to nightgowns and blankets. The extra heat that traps your body can make you irritable and can lead to restful sleep.
2. Make you stay young
A sleeping environment that is too warm and humid can prevent the drop in body temperature needed for restful sleep. In addition, the body temperature that is too high during sleep (more than 21ºC) will also interfere with the production of anti-aging hormones that work to repair any damage in the body. By repairing your cells, this hormone helps to smooth sores, freckles, and even wrinkles on the skin.
When we sleep in total darkness, melatonin is released and triggers a cooling of our core body temperature. As the body temperature decreases, the “youth” hormone is released and exhibits its regenerative miracles. If you sleep wearing a full nightgown, of course this process will be slightly hindered by the presence of additional heat enveloping your body.
3. Strengthen immunity
The body that is overheated during sleep keeps the stress hormone cortisol high. High levels of cortisol weaken the body's immune system, increase blood pressure and cholesterol, increase appetite, reduce libido, and disrupt the balance of hormones in the body.
In fact, sleep itself has been named the panacea of many conditions because it promotes the release of growth hormone.
In a study published in the journal Sleep, growth hormone released during a good night's sleep can improve exercise performance and lower blood pressure by 20-30%, for both those with normal and high blood pressure. Researchers at Warwick University found that sleep deprivation (less than six hours a night) was linked to a threefold increased risk of diabetes and heart disease.
4. Preventing fungal infections
Wearing underwear or pajama pants encourages increased sweat production in the groin, which triggers the growth of fungi that cause infection. By sleeping naked you let your intimate area breathe freely and stay dry to prevent excessive sweating, especially in summer.
5. Healthy vagina
In general, the vaginal area and its surroundings do not need to be restrained while sleeping. So said dr. Alyssa Dweck, a New York gynecologist and assistant professor of OB / GYN at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
The occasional "aerating" the vagina, especially while sleeping, is a good thing to do especially for women who are prone to vaginal irritation, infection, and itching.
The reason Dweck recommends women sleeping naked is that mold, yeast, and bacteria breed in dark, warm, and humid places. When your intimate area has been covered all day by layers of clothing, this can cause moisture buildup in the groin area.
6. Improve sperm quality
According to a study from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Maryland, and Stanford University, men who sleep wearing underwear or boxers are at risk for sperm DNA damage that could jeopardize your chances of having children. The increase in body temperature also increases the temperature in the testicles which causes a decrease in sperm quality.
Based on the study, sleeping naked at night is known to increase sperm quality by up to 25%. Also, occasionally "aerating" the penis, especially while sleeping, is a good thing to do to prevent irritation, yeast infection, and itching of the penis skin.
7. Better sex
People who sleep naked are reported to have better sex, according to a survey of a thousand British people. The survey found that sleeping naked was associated with an increase in sexual satisfaction between partners by up to 57 percent, compared to those who slept fully clothed.
This one benefit of sleeping naked may come from the reaction to the release of the "good mood" hormone oxytocin on skin-to-skin contact during sleep (as well as orgasm during sex). The hormone oxytocin fights stress and depression by combating the harmful effects of cortisol and reducing blood pressure. As a result, you feel happier, closer emotionally and physically to your partner, and more excited about having sex.
