If you experience itching or a reddish rash after using certain skin cosmetic products, this is a sign that your skin is sensitive. Some owners of sensitive skin even complain that their skin feels sore because it is dry, scaly and peeling. This skin problem is most likely caused by the ingredients contained in these products.
That's why you must always pay attention to the composition label of every cosmetic and skincare product before buying it.
Owners of sensitive skin must avoid these cosmetic ingredients
1. Methylisothiazone
Methylisothiazolinone (MI) is a preservative commonly found in skin care products, including wet wipes, shampoos, conditioners, body soaps, moisturizers, sunscreens, deodorants, and a number of cosmetic products.
MI is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis. According to St John's Institute of Dermatology in London, as many as 10% of people with sensitive skin also have an allergy to methylisothiazone.
Methylisothiazolinone has many aliases. Avoid products that have these names on the ingredient label:
- 2-Methyl-3 (2H) -isothiazolone
- 3 (2H) -Isothiazolone
- 2-methyl-
- Caswell No. 572A
- 2-Methyl-4-isothiazoline-3-one
- Neolone; Neolone 950; NeoloneCapG; Neolone M 10; Neolone M 50; Neolone PE
- MIT Optiphen
- MIT OriStar
- ProClin 150; ProClin 950
- SPX
- Zonen MT
2. Essential oil
Not all beauty products that are labeled organic or natural because they contain essential oils are safe for sensitive skin.
Instead, you should avoid these products because natural ingredients are difficult to test for safety medically. The acidic pH levels of some plant extracts such as citrus and mint (including peppermint) tend to cause irritation and hardness of sensitive skin
3 Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES)
SLS and SLES are the foaming chemicals in soaps, shampoos, conditioners and detergents.
Sulfates are made from mineral salts that contain sulfur. This can cause chronically dry skin and itching all over the body. People with sensitive skin should use sulfate-free cosmetics, shampoos and conditioners.
4. Oxychloride bismuth
Oxychloride bismuth is often used in mineral-based makeup products to give it a finished appearance matte or shimmery .
For people with sensitive skin, these cosmetic components can cause a red, itchy, and burning rash.
5. Perfume or fragrances
Avoid cosmetic products or skincare containing fragrances or perfumes of any kind. Chemical or natural ingredients that are used as fragrances can cause skin irritation in sensitive people.
6. Synthetic petrochemicals and emollients
Chemical thickeners such as liquid paraffin and mineral oil in certain lotions, shampoos, soaps, moisturizers, and skin creams can cause excess skin oil production. As a result, sensitive skin gets irritated more easily and makes the skin dull due to clogged pores.
If you have sensitive skin, use products that contain vegetable oils, such as jojoba oil and almond oil.
