Definition

What is an incisional hernia?

The operation performed on the abdomen requires an incision which is then closed with stitches. Sometimes the wound doesn't heal properly, causing stomach contents to squeeze out. This can cause a lump called a hernia. This can be dangerous because the intestines or other structures in the stomach can become trapped and blood flow stops (strangulated hernia).

What are the benefits of having an incisional hernia repair surgery?

You no longer have a hernia. Surgery can prevent serious complications that can be caused by a hernia.

When do I need to have incisional hernia repair surgery?

This open procedure is necessary if the stomach contents become trapped in the hernia (incarceration) or the trapped contents become tangled and cut off from the blood supply (strangulation). Obese patients may need an open procedure because the deep lining of the fatty tissue has to be removed from the abdominal wall. A net can be used in both laparoscopy and conventional open surgery.

Process

What should I do before undergoing incisional hernia repair surgery?

Talk to your doctor about any medications you are currently taking, allergies, or other health conditions before having surgery. Before surgery, schedule an appointment with your anesthetist. It is important that you follow your doctor's instructions to stop eating or drinking before surgery. You will be given preoperative instructions, such as whether you are allowed to eat before surgery. In general, you will need to fast 6 hours before the procedure begins. You may be allowed to drink fluids, such as coffee, a few hours before the surgery.

How is the surgical process for incisional hernia repair?

The operation can be performed under the option of anesthesia and lasts about 90 minutes. Your surgeon will make an incision in your old wound. Then the weak tissue will be repaired using sutures or by using a net which will be sewn into the muscle.

What should I do after undergoing incisional hernia repair surgery?

You are allowed to go home after 1 to 4 days. Take more steps by walking the first few days. Your doctor will tell you when you can return to activity. Exercise can help you get back to your normal activities. Consult your doctor first.

Complications

What complications can occur?

Long-term complications are rare after incisional hernia repair. The short-term risk is greater in patients who are obese or who have had several previous surgeries or netting.

Postoperative complications include:

buildup of fluid in the mesh, which requires aspiration (draining off)

bleeding after surgery

prolonged pain in the stitches is treated with painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs

ulcers in the intestines

injury to nerves

fever, usually associated with a wound infection

intra-abdominal abscess

urinary retention

respiratory disorders

You can minimize the risk of complications by following the doctor's instructions before surgery, such as fasting and stopping certain medications.
