What is it like when the amniotic fluid breaks?

Amniotic fluid is the fluid that surrounds your baby in the womb. This fluid can protect the baby from physical impact and also from various infections. Normally, the amniotic fluid will break at the beginning or during childbirth. However, sometimes the amniotic fluid can break prematurely. This is known as Premature rupture of membranes (KPD).

When your amniotic fluid breaks, you will usually feel a wet sensation in your vagina or in your perineum (the muscle that connects your vagina and anus). This discharge can be in small amounts or in large amounts, temporarily or last a long time.

You may have difficulty distinguishing whether what is coming out of your genitals is amniotic fluid or urine. This is especially true if you only experience the sensation of being wet or dripping. For that, you need to know the difference between amniotic fluid and urine.

The difference between amniotic fluid and urine

Sometimes, the rupture of the amniotic fluid is so slight and temporary that you just think of it as urine or pee. But it turns out that when you see your doctor, your amniotic fluid has decreased in amount. This may need to be watched out for so that you don't take the wrong step.

When your amniotic fluid breaks, you will feel a flow of water or water droplets from your vagina that you cannot control. Unlike urine, you can control when to pass and when to stop.

Once you realize this, it's best to place the dressing in your vaginal area. Then, from the sanitary napkin you can check the color and smell of the discharge. If the discharge from your pubic area is clear yellow, pale yellow, or greenish yellow and smells sweet or has no smell, it is amniotic fluid. The odor released by amniotic fluid can vary depending on the individual, ranging from sweet smelling to bitter odor, but the most common is sweet smelling. Meanwhile, if what comes out is urine, the liquid has a smell like ammonia and has a clear yellow or darker color.

In addition, if the discharge is amniotic fluid, you may find red spots like blood and mucus like whitish in the fluid. If you empty your bladder or urinate, but after that there is still fluid coming out. Most likely it is your ruptured amniotic fluid.

What to do if the amniotic fluid breaks?

If you notice amniotic fluid, you should immediately take yourself to the doctor. The doctor will then examine your condition further and decide whether your birth can still be delayed or if you have to give birth now. If your amniotic fluid has broken, it's best to practice good personal hygiene. Don't do anything that allows bacteria to enter your vagina, for example, having sex. This is done because you and your baby are more susceptible to infection once your amniotic fluid has broken.
