If you are allowed to eat, make sure the food you eat is safe and beneficial for the birth process.
Can you eat before giving birth?
Eating before childbirth is basically permissible, especially at the beginning of labor. It is at this time that mothers who give birth should eat and replenish their energy. During normal delivery, the mother needs a lot of energy to encourage the baby. If the mother does not have the energy, of course labor will be difficult. However, make sure you don't eat too much. Just fill your stomach with fluids and snacks rich in carbohydrates. Avoid foods high in fat because they are difficult for your body to digest and can make you nauseous.
In some cases, your obstetrician or midwife may recommend you to fast. This usually happens when you have a possible or planned birth by caesarean section. The reason is, the stomach should not be in a full state when a C-section takes place. To be safe, ask your obstetrician or midwife if you can eat and follow the instructions.
Good food consumed before childbirth
Basically, you need carbohydrates as a source of energy to give birth. However, choose a carbohydrate source that is easy to digest. Avoid foods that are too dense like beef. Here is a list of foods that can help smooth the process of your labor.
1. Yogurt
Yogurt is rich in carbohydrates and protein which are potent to increase your energy. This snack is also easy to carry everywhere, including on the way to the hospital or when delivery time is near. Don't forget to provide some cup small yogurt during maternity. If labor is taking a long time, you may be given a break first to recharge. Yogurt can also be your savior. Serve the yogurt with fresh fruit or nuts.
2. Fruits
Fruit sources are natural carbohydrates that are easily digested by the body. Apart from containing carbohydrates, fruits also contain lots of vitamins, minerals, and water which are essential for smooth labor. Fruits such as bananas, avocados, and apples are the right choice before giving birth.
3. Potatoes
Don't eat any potatoes before giving birth. You should eat mashed potatoes (mashed potato) or boiled potatoes. Avoid french fries, as their high fat and oil content can make you more nauseous during labor.
4. Bread
Eating rice with side dishes may be too heavy for mothers to give birth. So, replace it with eating bread a little at a time. No need to choose a meat sandwich. Because plain bread or plain bread with fruit jam is enough to fill your energy. In order to be full longer, you can eat whole wheat bread.
5. Soup
To increase fluid intake, eating clear soup can be the best choice for mothers in labor. For more nutrition, make sure the soup is made from real chicken or meat broth. Also add vegetables and tofu so that they are not too bland. If it is near the day of delivery, first cook the soup and store it in the refrigerator. Before starting the labor process, all you have to do is warm up the soup.
6. Biscuits
As a filling snack, prepare biscuits. You can choose regular milk biscuits or whole wheat crackers. However, try to choose the biscuits that are plain. Avoid crackers or crackers with too much cream. Saltine crackers can trigger hypertension while cream biscuits may make you nauseous.
