You may have experienced several blisters. Blisters filled with water or pus often sting, especially if accidentally touched. Because of this, the blisters on the skin often make you uncomfortable during activities.

What are blisters?

Blisters are a sore condition that causes the formation of circular bubbles filled with fluid. As already mentioned, the fluid in these blisters can be either water or pus. Sometimes, the blister will also contain blood.

One type of open wound is caused by touching the skin on a hot surface such as an exhaust or metal iron. Blisters can also be caused by rubbing the skin against a tight, rough surface such as rubbing the heel against a shoe that is too tight.

In addition, the causes of blisters include:

  • irritation, which can be from skin rubbing, chemicals, and temperatures that are too hot or cold,
  • allergic reactions, for example contact dermatitis when the skin comes into contact with an allergen from certain chemicals or plants,
  • infectious diseases, including impetigo, herpes, chicken pox, or coxsackievirus,
  • other skin diseases, such as dermatitis herpetiformis, bullous pemphigoid, and pemphigus vulgaris, as well as
  • certain medications, such as nalidixic acid or furosemide, because these drugs can cause skin reactions in the form of blisters.

The appearance of blisters gives discomfort during activities, especially because it makes the skin feel sore and itchy.

How to treat blisters?

Most blisters will heal on their own in one to two weeks, especially if the blister is small in size. Don't crush the blister either, just allow it to break on its own.

Rather than removing the blister, the treatment is more aimed at protecting the blister from exposure to nearby objects and preventing the wound from becoming infected.

To treat blisters, you must do the following.

  1. Use a pad to protect the skin around the blister from scuffing it. Cut the pad into a donut shape with a hole in the center, then attach it to the skin surrounding the blister. Then cover the wound with a loose bandage.
  2. Keep the area clean and covered. After the blister breaks, clean the area with soap and water.
  3. Apply petroleum jelly to keep skin moist.

Once the blister has deflated, do not remove the layer of skin that was covered by the blister. Because, this layer will protect the raw skin underneath during the healing process.

The blister may need to be broken if it is large and interferes with movement of the affected area of the body. Breaking these blisters should not be arbitrary, if you are not sure to do it yourself, it's better to ask your doctor for help.
