What Drug Lodoxamide?

What is lodoxamide for?

This medication is used to treat allergies to certain eyes (vernal keratoconjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis, vernal keratitis). This medicine prevents itching of the eyes that can occur in this condition. Lodoxamide is known as a mast cell stabilizer. It works by blocking certain natural substances (histamine, leukotriene) that cause allergy symptoms.

How is lodoxamide taken?

To apply eye drops, wash your hands first. To avoid contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper or let it touch your eye or other surface. Do not wear contact lenses while using this medicine. This medication is usually used 4 times a day or as directed by your doctor. Treatment can be continued for 3 months. Tilt your head back, look up, and pull down on the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Hold the dropper directly above the eye and place 1 drop into the bag. Look down and slowly close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger on the corner of the eye near the nose and massage gently. This will prevent the medicine from flowing out. Try not to blink and don't rub your eyes. Repeat this step if your dose is more than 1 drop and for the other eye if directed.

Do not rinse the dropper. Change the cap after use. If you are using any other type of eye medicine (for example, drops or ointment), wait at least 5 minutes before applying any other medicine. Use eye drops before eye ointment to allow the eye drops to enter the eye. Use this drug regularly to get optimal benefits. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time each day. Keep using this drug according to a doctor's prescription. If immediate help is needed, use another fast medication (such as eye drops containing antihistamines, decongestants, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory NSAIDs) along with lodoxamide as directed by your doctor. Tell your doctor if your condition remains the same or gets worse.

How is lodoxamide stored?

This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. Observe the storage instructions on the product package or ask your pharmacist. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.

Lodoxamide side effects

What side effects can I experience from lodoxamide?

Seek immediate medical help if you experience any of the following signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using lodoxamide and call your doctor if you experience severe burning or stinging when you put the medication in your eye, or for a long period of time after administering the drops.
Less serious side effects include:

⇒ itchy, painful, or reddish eyes
⇒ blurred vision
⇒ dry eyes
⇒ swollen or swollen eyelids
⇒ feel that something is in your eye
⇒ the skin hardens or drains from your eyes.

Lodoxamide Drug Warnings and Cautions

Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to lodoxamide or any other medication.
Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and non-prescription drugs you are using, especially other eye medications and vitamins. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while using lodoxamide eye drops, call your doctor. You should know that lodoxamide solution contains benzalkonium chloride, which soft contact lenses can absorb. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using lodoxamide and put them back in 10 to 15 minutes later.

Is lodoxamide safe for pregnant and lactating women?

There are no adequate studies regarding the risks of using this drug in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Always consult your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before using this medication.

This drug is included in the risk of pregnancy category B according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The following references the pregnancy risk categories according to the FDA:

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget a dose of this medicine, use it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
