Opening of the cervix (cervix) is a sign of a baby's birth process called an opening. The opening process of labor generally starts with opening 1 and ends with opening 10 when the baby is born. However, in some cases, the baby may not come out even though the mother has experienced a complete opening. What are the factors that cause this condition?

Cause the baby is difficult to come out at the opening

The opening and labor process can take several tens of minutes to hours.

For mothers who give birth for the first time, a labor duration of more than 20 hours is considered long and can endanger the condition of both the mother and the fetus.

Normally the baby will come out after the complete opening. However, in some cases, the baby is not born even though the cervix has opened up to 10.

Here are a number of factors that can be the cause:

1. Incompatibility of the size of the baby's head and mother's pelvis

Even if the mother has experienced a complete opening, the baby is at risk of not coming out if there is a mismatch between the size of the baby's head and the mother's pelvis.

This condition can occur in two forms, namely:

  • The baby's head or body is too large to pass over the mother's pelvis
  • The mother's pelvis is too narrow or has an abnormal shape

Launch American Pregnancy Association , a condition which is medically referred to as cephalopelvic disproportion this occurs in 1 in 250 pregnancies.

Pregnant women usually need to undergo a follow-up caesarean section to remove the fetus immediately.

2. The contraction is not strong enough

The frequency of contractions will continue to increase during labor. Towards the birth of the baby, contractions can occur every 2-3 minutes.

Contractions that are not strong enough will cause the baby not to come out even after the opening is complete.

To assess how strong the contractions are, the doctor usually needs to feel the mother's abdominal area. Contractions are said to be effective when the abdominal muscles are tense enough and they occur more frequently before birth.

If the contractions are not effective enough, the mother is advised to undergo labor induction.

3. Placenta previa

Placenta previa is a condition when the placenta (placenta) covers part or all of the cervix. The presence of a placenta in the birth canal can cause heavy bleeding during pregnancy and delivery.

If the placenta does not return to its original position until just before delivery, it is not advisable for pregnant women to push.

This is to prevent bleeding, but the drawback is that the baby cannot come out even after the opening is complete.

4. The fetal position is not normal

The best position for the fetus to be born is upside down with the head down. This position allows the fetal head to come out first so that the body can follow easily.

However, the fetus can sometimes be in an abnormal position until just before delivery.

An abnormal position can cause the baby not to come out when the opening is large. Some of these positions include:

  • The head of the fetus is down, but the face of the fetus is facing the birth canal thus covering it
  • Breech, either buttocks or legs first
  • Horizontal, not starting with the head, buttocks, or legs

5. Emergency conditions and fetal distress

Conditions during labor can hinder or even stop the entire labor process.

For mothers, emergency conditions are usually associated with bleeding, high blood pressure, or the mother is tired from a long labor process.

As for the fetus, here are some conditions that are classified as serious:

  • Abnormal fetal heart rate
  • Too little amniotic water
  • There are problems with the muscles and movement of the fetus
  • The fetus is deprived of oxygen
  • The fetus is entangled in the umbilical cord
  • Fetal development comes to a halt

If an emergency occurs, the delivery process must be completed immediately in order to save the mother and the fetus.

The doctor will provide recommendations for ways to make the baby come out when the complete opening does not have any effect.

In fact, some of the factors that hinder labor are unavoidable. However, you can reduce the risk by undergoing routine obstetric checks during pregnancy.
