You may often hear or see warnings: Watch out for heart disease! Which heart disease is it referring to? Actually, there are various types of heart defects and can occur at the same time. Here I will discuss some of the most common types of heart diseases and disorders.
The most common type of heart disease
1. Coronary Heart Disease
Perhaps this type of heart disease is the most famous and feared by many people. Coronary heart disease is a narrowing of the coronary arteries. Coronary blood vessels are vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle cells.
So, when the blood vessels are narrowed, oxygen will not reach the heart, which in turn causes heart function to be impaired. Usually, this narrowing of the blood vessels is caused by accumulating fatty plaques which is called atherosclerosis.
If more and more fat has accumulated, the narrowed area of blood vessels will expand. This is what will trigger a sudden heart attack.
If you are suspected of having coronary heart disease, the doctor will suggest doing a cardiac catheterization or coronary CT scan. When the blood vessels narrow and blood flow is blocked suddenly, a person will experience what is called a heart attack.
2. Heart valve disease
The normal human heart consists of four main chambers. The four heart valves act as "doors" between the chambers in the heart and the main blood vessels.
Malfunctioning of the valves can cause the pressure in one of the chambers of the heart to increase. This type of heart disease will generally cause symptoms of shortness of breath to feel tired. Malfunctioning of these valves can be caused by infection, congenital abnormalities, complications from coronary heart disease, high blood pressure or due to the aging process.
Echocardiography examination (ultrasound of the heart) will provide a clearer picture of this disorder. This disease is often referred to by ordinary people as a leaky valve disease in the heart.
3. Congenital heart disease
Heart disease can also be caused by birth defects. The most frequently encountered abnormalities include defects in the heart chamber or walls of the heart chamber or atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, and patent ductus arteriosus.
Usually, patent ductus arteriosus is a congenital heart disease in infants known as leaky heart disease. In addition, there are various kinds of congenital heart valve abnormalities caused by disruption in the formation of the fetus as well as various other heart defects that are relatively rare.
4. Heart rhythm disturbances
A normal heart beats at a regular rhythm. Scientifically, heart rhythm disturbances are called dysrhythmias. Like the heart defect I described earlier, this heart rhythm disorder can also be a congenital abnormality. The complaints felt by sufferers of this disorder are usually palpitations, dizziness or fainting.
Heart attack, can cause fatal heart rhythm disturbances and lead to sudden death. Disorders of the structure of the heart due to valve abnormalities can cause an irregular heart rhythm, so that it has the opportunity to cause a stroke. This disorder can be detected through an electrocardiogram (EKG), holter or spyder examination.
If you experience chest pain, you should immediately see a doctor so that you can find out what kind of heart disease you may be experiencing.
