Dark spots on the skin, aka age spots or liver spots, are brown or black flat patches that appear on the face, hands, and arms. These black spots arise due to the aging process or excessive sun exposure from routine outdoor activities.
Spots on the skin are generally not dangerous. But for some people, the appearance of these black spots may be considered disturbing appearance. Here are various natural ways that can help get rid of it.
How do you get rid of black spots on the skin?
1. Whitening cream
Whitening creams are an easy way to get rid of dark spots on the skin. Fading creams and lotions are easy to use but you must remember to use them regularly as directed. You must choose a product that contains hydroquinone, glycolic acid or kojic acid. These chemicals lighten the skin and are safe to use. However, using a fading cream can take a long time. You may have to wait several months to see any progress.
2. Medicines
Sometimes, doctors can prescribe several types of whitening creams that contain hydroquinone to be used independently or in combination with retinoids (tretinoin). The dark spots on your skin can fade gradually over time. If you are taking medication, you should also use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more to protect your skin from the appearance of other sun spots. This treatment can cause redness and dryness of the skin.
3. Laser or light therapy
Laser or light therapy works to destroy the cells that produce excess melanin. This therapy does not damage the skin. This treatment program may consist of several sessions. You may have to undergo several sessions of therapy before the effects become apparent. After that, you should protect your skin with sunscreen and closed clothing.
4. Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion using a wire brush or diamond wheel to remove the top layer of skin. This method is classified as being able to damage the skin and cause bleeding. After the skin heals, new skin will grow so that black spots will not be obvious. New skin can grow after 5 to 8 days. After 6 to 12 weeks, the spots will fade. If you treat your entire face, you will need more time to recover after the procedure.
Most people experience no pain and can return to work right after treatment. Sometimes, swelling and pain can occur. Remember to keep your skin clean and protect it from sunburn.
5. Chemical peels
In chemical peels, the doctor uses a device to remove the top layer of skin. As new skin grows, age spots can fade. You may have to stop using some medications before you start this procedure. The chemicals used include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid. You should protect your skin with sunscreen when you go out, because after the procedure, your skin can become more susceptible to the sun. New skin can grow after a few days and most dark spots can disappear after a few months.
It's a good idea to first consult your dermatologist to discuss which method is best for your case.
