Medical experts in Indonesia are currently using blood plasma or convalescent plasma as a therapy for treating moderate and severe COVID-19 patients. The call to donate blood plasma for healthy COVID-19 survivors continues to be echoed in many media.
How and what are the requirements for blood plasma donation?
Requirements and methods for convalescent plasma donors for COVID-19
Convalescent blood plasma or plasma therapy is a treatment that is given by transfusing the blood plasma of recovered COVID-19 patients to patients who are currently being treated.
When infected with COVID-19, the human immune system will naturally form antibodies to fight the infection. After the patient has recovered, these antibodies will remain in his body and be in the blood plasma.
Blood plasma transfusions that contain antibodies are believed to be able to help other COVID-19 patients who are feared not being able to naturally form antibodies in their bodies.
If you have recovered from COVID-19, chances are that your blood plasma contains COVID-19 antibodies and that this can help others fight COVID-19.
But not all COVID-19 survivors can do conventional plasma donors because they must first go through health considerations.
Criteria for blood plasma donors for COVID-19:
- Age 18-60 years
- Weight not less than 55 kg
- Has been declared cured of COVID-19 with a negative PCR swab result or with a certificate of recovery from a doctor
- Healthy, symptom free for 14 days after recovery
Blood plasma donation flow:
- Donors are asked to fill out a sheet informed consent (approval).
- The donor will receive a blood sample screening , measurement of height and weight, checking blood type, and checking blood pressure.
- Donors who meet the criteria can be performed plasmapheresis and 400-500 CC of convalescent plasma is taken.
- Convalescent plasma can be administered directly to the patient or stored at -20 ° C to -30 ° C.
In Indonesia, the acceptance of blood plasma donors is carried out by the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) or hospitals that have blood plasma donor facilities. COVID-19 Outbreak updates Country: IndonesiaData

In Indonesia, convalescent plasma therapy is still in clinical trials by the Ministry of Health and in collaboration with several experts or hospitals.
An international blood plasma trial led by REMAP-CAP said Monday (11/01) that blood plasma therapy for COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms was not very effective.
This decision was taken after an initial analysis of more than 900 trial participants who were admitted to intensive care (ICU). The results showed that treatment with conventional plasma therapy did not improve the cure outcomes.
Trials are still continuing on COVID-19 patients with moderate symptoms who are being treated in hospital.
This analysis did not initially assess the effect of blood plasma therapy in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with moderate symptoms. The lead researcher said this was an important question and should be explored further in clinical trials.
