You may have heard of the mayo diet. Or maybe you have been there? Many say a diet that relies on foods without salt can effectively lose weight up to 5 kg in two weeks! Interested?

Wait a minute, is this diet healthy?

What is the mayo diet?

The long-running mayo diet is a type of diet that primarily limits the consumption of carbohydrates and salt. Those following the mayo diet will be asked to adhere to the rules and restrictions that exist for 13 days. This diet promises weight loss of up to 7 kg during a cycle of 13 days.

Currently there are many food caterers that provide a 13-day mayo diet menu, if you pay attention, usually the type of menu served is processed by steaming or grilling. There is no rice, the menu is dominated by vegetables and protein sources. Do not forget that the food is processed without salt.

By researchers, this diet is also called fad diet, which means that the benefits have not been proven for health and the effect is not yet known in the long term. This mayo diet has nothing to do with the Mayo Clinic. The claims of rapid weight loss in the mayo diet could be due to drastically reducing your carbohydrate intake.

Why can you lose weight dramatically because of the mayo diet?

As the main source of energy, carbohydrates in the body are stored in the form of glycogen which is then used as fuel for your activities. When these glycogen reserves are depleted, the body will use fat as an energy source.

However, when your body still doesn't get carbohydrates, over time the protein will be broken down to become a source of energy. Because your body cannot store protein as it stores carbohydrates, over time the body lacks protein. Amino acids can no longer be used to repair damaged body cells. The most visible sign when your body is deficient in protein is a decrease in muscle mass. This can cause you to look thin.

What are the consequences if we limit salt intake?

Limiting salt consumption in this diet is claimed to reduce weight. This is not entirely wrong because salt binds water in the body. If you know the term bloating aka the body "swells", then salt is one of the causes bloating . Or if you always feel thirsty after eating salty foods, the water-binding nature of the salt is what is happening to your body.

The mayo diet strictly limits salt consumption, so it is not impossible for you to urinate frequently. This is because no salt can bind water in your body. Salt also contains sodium, an electrolyte compound that works to maintain fluid balance in the body. Because there is no water bound and the frequency of urination increases, you experience a drastic weight loss as a result of loss of body fluids.

Side effects of a no-salt diet

One of the effects of the mayo diet is the yo-yo effect. When your 13 day mayo diet cycle is over, you return to your old diet, and there is weight gain. Because the mayo diet only limits your calories without changing your overall lifestyle, when you return to eating as before the diet, your weight will also slowly return to normal.

Following the mayo diet for a long period of time is not really recommended, because it limits certain types of nutrients and its few calories make you prone to nutrient deficiencies.
