What Drug Fluorescein?

What is Fluorescein used for?

Fluorescein is a substance used in diagnostic fluorescein angiography or angioscopy of the fundus and iris vessels.

What are the rules for using Fluorescein?

Injecting the dose (more than 5-10 seconds is usually recommended) into the antecubital vein, after taking precautions to avoid extravasation. A syringe, filled with AK-FLUOR®, can be attached to a transparent tube and 23 butterfly needles for injection. Insert a needle and draw the patient's blood into the syringe so that small air bubbles separate the patient's blood from the fluorescein in the tube. With the room light on, slowly inject the blood back into the vein while observing the skin over the tip of the needle. If the needle has been extravasated, the patient's blood will look like a skin protrusion and the injection must be stopped before fluorescein is injected. When it is certain that extravasation is not occurring, the room lights can be turned off and fluorescein injection can be performed.

Luminescence usually appears on the retina and choroid vessels for 7-14 seconds and can be observed by standard observation equipment.

A reduction in dosage from 500 mg to 200 mg AK-FLUOR® 10% may be appropriate in cases when very sensitive imaging systems eg, laser scanning ophthalmoscope are used.

How to store Fluorescein?

This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. Observe the storage instructions on the product package or ask your pharmacist. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.

There are no adequate studies regarding the risks of using this drug in pregnant or breastfeeding women. This drug is included in the risk of pregnancy category C according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). (A = No risk, B = No risk in some studies, C = Possible risk, D = Positive evidence of risk, X = Contraindicated, N = Unknown)

Fluorescein sodium has been shown to flow in human milk. Particular care is needed when fluorescein sodium is given to breastfeeding women.

Common side effects include nausea, headache, indigestion, fainting, vomiting, low blood pressure, and symptoms and signs of hypersensitivity.

What is the dose of fluorescein for adults?

Oral

Exocrine function of the pancreas

Adults: 348.5 mg fluorescein dilaurate (equivalent to 0.5 mmol fluorescein), given with food. Collect urine for the next 10 hours. A control dose of 188.14 mg fluorescein Na (equivalent to 0.5 mmol of fluorescein) was given the following day under the same conditions.

Intravenous

Angioscopy of the retinal and iris vessels

Adult: 500 mg (as 10% or 25% soln) over 5-10 seconds into the antecubital vein. It can also be given orally 25 mg / kg using fluorescein soda.

Children: 7.5 mg / kg.

Ophthalmic

Detection of wounds and foreign bodies on the cornea

Adults: Use a 1% or 2% solution in the form of eye drops or sterile paper with fluorescein sodium. It can also be given in combination with local anesthetics: as a 0.25% solution with oxybuprocaine HCl or proxymetacaine HCl.

Eye drop aid in fixing hard contact lenses

Adults: Use the 1% or 2% solution as eye drops or sterile paper with fluorescein sodium. It can also be given in combination with local anesthetics: as a 0.25% solution with oxybuprocaine HCl or proxymetacaine HCl.

For pediatric patients, dosage is calculated on the basis of 35 mg for every ten pounds of body weight.
