Tremors can occur not only in the hands and feet, but also in the head. Some people may experience a trembling head so that their daily activities such as eating, drinking, and even working become difficult. How to handle it?
What causes the head to shake?
Shaking head can be caused by several things. The most common cause is due to essential tremor. Tremor is a condition of the nervous system that causes shaking or shaking in certain parts of the body, including the head. Sometimes, your voice can vibrate as well as the trembling head symptoms take place.
Meanwhile, essential tremor is uncontrolled rhythmic shaking of a certain body part. Most commonly affects the hands, arms or head. This condition is caused by abnormal communication between certain areas of the brain and is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease.
Essential tremor risk factors
In general, this condition is felt in many older people, and can get worse with age.
The cause of the shaking head due to tremors is not known for sure and there is no cure until now. However, many other factors or illnesses can cause head tremors, including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, fatigue after exercise, extreme emotional distress, brain tumors, from taking some prescription drugs, metabolic disorders, and withdrawal from alcohol or drug addiction.
A study from Healthline reported that 33 percent of people with Parkinson's disease also experienced symptoms of internal tremors from inside their heads. Thirty-six percent of people with multiple sclerosis also report feeling internal vibrations in their heads. Sometimes, feeling anxious and restless can cause tremors or worsen tremors.
Most people with internal tremors also have other sensory symptoms, such as pain, tingling, and burning sensation in their head. The other symptoms you have with tremors can provide clues to the condition you have.
Symptoms of essential tremor
Apart from a trembling head, here are the other main symptoms of essential tremor:
- Uncontrollable shaking of the body, hand or leg that occurs for a short period of time
- The voice shook too
- Tremors worsen when you are stressed.
- The tremor gets worse when you make the movements that are intentional
- You can get less shaking in your head when you rest
- You have balance problems (in rare cases)
Although essential tremor is not a life-threatening disease, it can have a negative impact on your life.
What are the consequences?
Uncontrolled shaking of the head can reduce a person's quality of life in many ways, including:
- Difficulty doing daily activities such as writing, dressing or eating
- Irritability and stress, which is caused by the inability to control the part of the body affected by tremors
- Experiencing shyness in socializing
- Increased body fatigue
How to diagnose a shaking head due to tremors?
Generally, doctors will diagnose tremors in the head with a complete neurological examination.
There is no specific blood test, urine test, or other test used to diagnose this condition.
As part of the tremor test, your doctor may consider other causes of the tremor. Possibilities could include thyroid disease, excessive caffeine intake, or a side effect of medications.
Can this trembling head condition be cured?
If the head is shaking with a light vibration it may not require maintenance. However, if the shaking of your head interferes with your daily ability you might consider medication or surgical treatment.
1. Take medicine
Taking medication regularly can reduce tremors in the head due to essential tremors. Medicines that can be drunk include fabrics such as Inderal, Mysoline, Neurontin, and Topamax. Other drug options include the sedative Ativan, Klonopin, Valium, and Xanax. Botox injections can also be a treatment option. This treatment is effective for vocal and head vibrations.
2. Brain surgery
Deep brain stimulation (DBS, deep brain stimulation) is a surgical treatment option for people with severe tremors. This also applies even if the person with a trembling head has undergone medical therapy.
DBS is a method that uses the implantation of electric lead into the thalamus in the brain. The thalamus is an area deep in the brain that coordinates control of the body's muscles. It is thought that the thalamus is what is problematic and makes the hands, feet, or head tremble.
3. Focused high intensity ultrasound
This is the Neuravive method (a non-incision surgical method that uses ultrasound). This method uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to allow ultrasound to focus on destroying tissue in the thalamus. During this procedure, you are not sedated but are left awake and must be able to respond during treatment.
