Previously, the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) ordered the withdrawal of ranitidine from the market. This is done because these compounds are thought to contain compounds that can trigger cancer. But now, BPOM has issued an official circular stating that ranitidine can be re-circulated. Why is that?

The reason ranitidine was re-circulated on the market

Ranitidine is a drug used to treat stomach and intestinal ulcers.

This drug, which is quite popular in Indonesia, was actually banned from circulating in the market because it contains compounds that can trigger cancer cells, namely N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) .

This announcement was broadcast on the official BPOM website on Friday (11/10).

Some ranitidine products have been shown to contain NDMA although in relatively small amounts. However, this small amount is thought to trigger cancer if consumed for a long time.

This is the basis for BPOM to ask ranitidine producers to temporarily stop production, distribution and withdraw their products from the market.

However, based on an official circular on its website, on Thursday (21/11), BPOM announced the permit for ranitidin to be re-circulated.

According to BPOM, after conducting a study and laboratory testing of contaminants N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in ranitidine on the market, some products are declared safe.

This is because global studies agree that the allowable limit of NDMA contamination is 96 ng / day.

This means that some products do not violate these thresholds so that they can be used in medicine.

There are 37 ranitidine drugs that are officially allowed to return to circulation. Apart from that, the product is declared to be withdrawn from circulation and destroyed in accordance with the provisions of the statutory regulations.

If you want to find out more information about the drug ranitidine, you can check it through the BPOM page or the BPOM Check application.

Normally, ranitidine is consumed orally, aka taken directly by mouth either with or without food.

Medicines are usually taken 1 to 2 times a day according to the doctor's instructions or what is written on the medicine package.
