"Smoking can cause cancer, heart attacks, impotence, and pregnancy problems. Maybe you are bored to death hearing this cliché jargon. On the other hand, quitting smoking is not as easy as imagined even though you fully understand the dangers. You may even be an inch away from giving up.

Smoking is like addiction. The nicotine in cigarettes is an addictive substance and the smoking habit has become an addiction in itself, so quitting smoking does not only require courage; sometimes, quitting smoking requires a little help.

Nicotine-free vaping is the reinforcements that most would-be ex-smokers go to.

Are nicotine-free e-cigarettes effective in helping to quit smoking?

According to a WHO report, there is not enough evidence to suggest that e-cigarettes help people quit smoking. After investigating, the key to quitting smoking with e-cigarettes is not using nicotine-free vape fluids.

Smokers who are currently switching to vaping as an effort to quit smoking, are recommended to actually increase the dose of nicotine in their e-cigarettes and use it regularly every day, in order to stop their smoking habit. That's according to the results of two separate research papers, reported by the Guardian.

What may also be even more advantageous is to use the vape model that comes with a vape liquid refillable tank. The refill tank allows the vape user to adjust the nicotine content and taste in the liquid as needed, which can provide a higher nicotine dose.

The study was based on a December 2012 survey of more than 1,500 smokers in the UK, which was followed up exactly a year later. The first study, published in the journal Addiction, found that 65% of participants who used e-cigarettes every day successfully continued their efforts to quit smoking within the next year, compared with 44% of smokers who did not use e-cigarettes. As many as 14 percent of them have reduced their tobacco consumption by at least half the time.

A second study, published in Nicotine and Tobacco Research, found that only 25% of 587 e-cigarette users used the tank model on a daily basis. However, of this percentage, 28% of them had quit smoking tobacco after one year compared to 13% of smokers who did not use e-cigarettes at all.

These two papers do not conclude that using e-cigarettes allows people to quit smoking, but the results provide ample evidence that using e-cigarettes can help those who are trying to quit smoking. Professor Ann McNeill of King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, where the two studies originated, said, “If you use e-cigarettes, use them often and stop smoking tobacco as soon as possible. If e-cigarettes don't work for you, switch to another (quit smoking) method."

How to quit smoking using e-cigarettes

  1. Use vape fluids that contain the highest nicotine content you can get when buying refills. Vape regularly every day.
  2. After you have routinely used the highest nicotine doses of e-cigarettes, and you are proficient enough to use them properly, slowly start reducing the nicotine dose. Just like the changes to smoking habits you've made in the past, you and your body will quickly get used to decreasing the nicotine dose. It's only a matter of time. Switch to lower doses of nicotine only when you feel comfortable.
  3. When you have started switching to a lower dose, use vape regularly for several months as in step 1.
  4. Once you become accustomed to a moderate dose after a long period of use, refill your vape liquid tank with the lowest nicotine dose available. Continue using its routine until you feel ready to move on to a new one.
  5. At the same time, you should intentionally start leaving your e-cigarettes at home during your outdoor activities throughout the day. Go through your entire routine as usual without your vaping and watch how you feel. The trick is to get in the habit of being a non-smoker, even if it's only for a few hours a day.
  6. It's time to refill the vape tank. Now, use a vape liquid that is completely nicotine-free. This is only one step away from being a non-smoker. You will soon be on the right path to getting rid of nicotine. But don't make grandiose promises of when to completely stop vaping if you can't keep them. Therefore, buy a few bottles of nicotine-free vape liquid refill for future supplies.

Conclusion

The trick to quitting smoking with e-cigarettes is to make drastic changes slowly but surely. Only you know your abilities and limits.

However, this method is not necessarily suitable for everyone. If you find yourself hooked on e-cigarettes, or have been trying the above techniques for a while and are still able to "upgrade" to vaping without nicotine, maybe you should look for other helpful techniques for quitting.
