In Greek mythology, it is told of a young man named Dimoetes who falls in love with the corpse of the most beautiful woman he has ever met, so he decides to have intercourse with the corpse repeatedly. Achilles is also said to have had sex with the corpse of the queen of the Amazon, Penthesilea, after he killed her in battle.
This tendency to have sex with a corpse is referred to as necrophilia. Moving on to thousands of years later, there are many more cases of people having sex with corpses in various cultures of the modern world. The legendary serial killer, Ted Bundy, for example. Many of the murders committed by Ted Bundy resulted in cases of necrophilia. Bundy also reportedly visited the corpses of his victims to dress them up and sexually acted on them until their bodies rot or were eaten by wild animals.

What is necrophilia?
Necrophilia or necrophilia is a form of deviant sexual behavior characterized by the desire to have sex with a corpse (it can be a human body or an animal carcass). This desire is very strong and comes very often. A person with necrophilia will be aroused by fantasies or real sexual contact with a deceased person. Some necrophiles (the name for necrophilia) can find sexual pleasure from simple things like when they are near a corpse, while other necrophiles want direct sexual contact with a dead person through vaginal, oral, anal penetration, or masturbating in front of a corpse.
Sexual behavior associated with necrophilia may have serious social and legal consequences. Experts and legal policy boards around the world consider necrophilia to be an act of rape because a deceased person cannot give permission for what other people do to their body.
How come, there are people who like to have sex with corpses?
According to psychologists, the most common motive for necrophilia is an attempt to find a sex partner who is unable to resist, which allows the necrophile to freely express themselves sexually without fear of rejection. This suggests that there may be symptoms of social anxiety or a history of difficulty establishing social relationships and / or interpersonal communication among some of the sufferers.

Apart from the two motives above, there are still many reported triggers for the tendency of necrophilia. Some sufferers only show a sexual desire to "get back into a relationship" with their deceased partner. Some experts also believe necrophilia stems from childhood trauma, such as sexual abuse, so that they cannot achieve sexual satisfaction with a living partner. Other motives can be as simple as that they feel the appearance of rotting bodies, skulls, and bones is so erotic.
To fulfill their sexual desires, necrophiles can work in places where they will have easy access to corpse stocks, such as morgues or coroner's offices. Some necrophiles can hire commercial sex workers (CSWs) to then ask them to make themselves as pale as a corpse and pretend to be dead during sex. There are also some (albeit very rare) necrophiles who actually commit murder in order to gain access to lifeless bodies.
There are various types of necrophilia
Based on the observations of experts, there are five types of necrophilia:
- Regular Necrophilia: use of a dead body for sexual pleasure.
- Necrophilic Fantasy: having and imagining sexual fantasies and / or contacts, regardless of whether the dreams are acted upon or not.
- Necrophilic Homicide: follow up on his sexual fantasies by committing a real murder in order to gain direct access to the corpse for sexual pleasure. The act of murder is also part of his sexual urge / fantasy.
- Pseudonecrophilia: incidence of sexual intercourse with a corpse that occurred only once, with no prior history of arousal predisposition / fantasy necrophilia.
- Necrosadism: Sexual enjoyment comes from acts of sadism committed on a corpse, such as mutilating or drinking the corpse's blood. Experts consider cases of necrosadism to overlap between pure necrophilia and other sexual deviations or personality disorders.
The dangers of having sex with a corpse
Apart from deviating from social norms, necrophilia is also detrimental to humans who engage in sexual relations with corpses. Having sex with a corpse can be fatal. The dangers of having sex with a corpse relate to the improper preparation and disposal of a corpse.
Contamination of the water supply by bodies dumped without burial, burial sites, or at temporary storage sites can result in the spread of gastroenteritis from the intestinal contents of the corpse. The substances cadaverine and putressin produced during the decay of animal and human carcasses give off a foul odor that can be poisonous if ingested in large doses.
There is a risk of transmitting chronic infections and diseases through direct contact with corpses who may have suffered from these diseases during their lifetime, such as kuru disease, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, HIV, enteric intestinal pathogens, tuberculosis, cholera and others.
Can necrophilia be cured?
Necrophilia should not be treated as a more heretical act than rape, murder, or incest. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM (a guidebook for mental health diagnosis), most cases of sexual disorders can be treated with CBT counseling and therapy to help sufferers change their behavior. Medication can help to reduce the compulsions associated with necrophilia and reduce the number of sexual fantasies and deviant behaviors involved in.
In some cases, hormone therapy may be prescribed for individuals who frequently experience recurring abnormal or dangerous sexual behavior. Many of these drugs work by reducing an individual's sex drive.
