While pregnant, some women spit more often. Although not all women experience it, this condition is quite normal in pregnant women. Even so, what is the cause of this condition? Then how to solve it?

The cause of frequent spitting during pregnancy

Under normal conditions, the saliva (saliva) produced by the salivary glands is 1.5 liters a day. Meanwhile, during pregnancy, it is very possible that excess saliva is produced by the salivary glands.

Even so, this condition is still classified as normal and harmless, so that pregnant women who experience it do not need to worry. Generally this condition occurs in women who experience it morning sickness or nausea.

Here are some things that cause frequent spitting up during pregnancy.

1. Hormonal changes

Although it is still uncertain, the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy make the pregnant woman's saliva increase, so she often spits up.

2. Nausea

When feeling nauseous, pregnant women tend to be lazy to swallow because they are afraid that the nausea will come back.

This causes the production of saliva to increase in the mouth, which makes women during pregnancy often spit. Usually, this condition is experienced by people who experience it morning sickness which is quite severe in the early days of pregnancy.

3. Heartburn or a burning sensation in the chest

H eartburn has become one of the things commonly experienced by pregnant women. The acid in the stomach that rises can injure the esophagus, so that the acid sensor in the esophagus triggers the production of saliva with a greater concentration of bicarbonate.

So, every time you swallow, saliva will wet the walls of the esophagus and help neutralize increased stomach acid.

4. Certain health conditions

There are several conditions that may cause irritation to the mouth area, such as smoking, tooth decay, or other oral problems experienced by pregnant women so that they have a greater desire to spit. Not only that, the use of certain drugs and certain diseases can trigger increased saliva production.

Overcoming the problem of increasing saliva production

Increased saliva production during pregnancy is not a preventable condition, it can be treated. Therefore, pregnant women do not need to worry if suddenly they often spit while pregnant. Accept this condition and don't become a burden on your mind. Instead, deal with the following things.

1. Drink more water

By consuming more water, pregnant women can swallow more saliva than not consuming water at all. It's best if you are pregnant, you carry a water bottle with you wherever you go so that you can drink a little water at a time. By drinking frequently, you may be able to reduce the frequency of spitting up during pregnancy.

2. Maintain cleanliness of teeth and mouth

Considering that one of the things that has the potential to increase saliva production is oral health problems, you must always take care of it. For example, be diligent in brushing your teeth and using it mouthwash afterwards. If you feel nauseous, use toothpaste and mouthwash which is not very smelly and fresh.

When you brush your teeth and wash your mouth, you will get more and more of the excess saliva in your mouth in the right places, so you won't often spit carelessly during pregnancy.

3. Chew candy that does not contain sugar

Another way to spit frequency is to eat candy. But, don't just candy, okay. It's better to choose candy that doesn't contain sugar so you can chew it often. Not just candy, if you prefer to chew on ice cubes, you can chew ice cubes so you don't get too nauseous.

4. Eat often but in small amounts

Reducing the frequency of eating can be one of the reasons you spit more frequently during pregnancy. Unfortunately, if you are nauseous, you will lose your appetite, which makes you lazy to eat. If so, it will be more difficult for you to cope with the condition of frequent spitting during pregnancy.

Therefore, you have to keep eating so that your saliva production doesn't increase. To avoid feeling nauseous, try to eat small amounts but often. That way, your nutritional needs are still met, but you don't need to feel nauseous because you only eat small amounts. If you do this, you may experience less spitting as well.

5. Bring a tissue or cleaning cloth

If this condition still troubles you, especially when traveling, you should bring a cloth or tissue when you are outside. You can use the tissue or cloth as a spit container that can be thrown away when the saliva is full. Because, you could be in a closed room so you can't spit freely.
