Having beautiful eyes complete with thick lashes is the dream of many women. But most women don't have enough time - or the patience - to put on fake lashes or do two or three mascara reviews to get seductive curls. So, it is not surprising that the trend of planting synthetic lashes, aka eyelash extensions, seems to never go out.
However, applying eyelash extensions is not risk free. The adhesive used to attach synthetic lashes can cause eye irritation and even infection, if you don't take good care of your eyes. The weight of false lashes can also cause your real lashes to fall out easily. Consider the following guidelines for caring for and protecting eye health after applying lash extensions.
Tips for protecting eye health after planting eyelash extensions
Basically, you still have to always maintain eye cleanliness and health at all times, not just after planting new lashes. Then, what things should be done?
1. Touch your eyes less
When the lash extensions are firmly in place, there are usually a few things you shouldn't do. The goal is to keep your false eyelash extensions long and long lasting. One of them is not to touch the eye area too often, rubbing it, or even rubbing it hard.
Touching your eyes too often will make your eyelash extension adhesive brittle and fall off quickly. As a result, you have to go back and forth more often to retouch your appearance. In addition, touching your eyes runs the risk of transferring bacteria on your hands to your eye area. Bacterial infection can cause redness and swelling of the eyes (conjunctivitis). When a bacterial infection attacks the skin area around the eyelids, it is known as blepharitis.
2. Be careful when washing your face
Usually you are advised not to wash your face in the first few hours after planting the lash extensions. The goal is that your false lashes stick well and don't fall out easily. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, it will take at least six hours for your false lashes to stick together. During this time you may not be allowed to wash your face first.
When you are able to wash your face, avoid washing the area around the eyes for a while. Don't be tempted to rub your eyes when cleaning your face. Gently dry by patting the towel on the wet area around the eyes.
3. Immediately see a doctor if irritation occurs
The substances in the hair extension adhesive have the potential to cause allergic reactions which can irritate the eyes.
Although cases of allergic reactions to eyelash extensions are rare, you should still be careful, especially if you have allergies to certain chemicals or foreign substances. Make sure to convey the condition you have to the beauty therapist who will treat you.
If within a few days of implanting your false lashes you feel uncomfortable around your eyes and you develop symptoms of allergies or infections such as itching, redness, or swelling, consult a doctor immediately.
