Having a face as smooth as porcelain is the dream of many women. However, some people feel they have problems with large pores. Apart from making facial skin look uneven, large pores can also be a place for pimples and blackheads to grow. Is there skincare which can shrink pores?

List of skincare to help shrink pores

First, first understand that the fact that skin pores cannot be enlarged or minimized on their own. Everyone's pore size is different, and is generally influenced by genetic factors. But beyond that, the appearance of your pores can appear bigger than usual for several reasons.

According to a 2016 study from Korea, enlarged pores on the face can be caused by how much oil the sebum glands produce. When your facial sebum glands produce a lot of oil, your pores will appear bigger. This happens a lot in people with oily skin types.

Decreased skin elasticity and clogged hair follicles or dirt can also cause facial pores to appear large.

So, are there any skincare products that can help "shrink" large pores?

1. Retinol

According to dr. Debra Jaliman, a dermatologist from New York, said that retinol is one of the active ingredients in skincare which can help "shrink" pores.

Dr. Jaliman said that retinol works to encourage the turnover (regeneration) of facial skin cells. When dirt and dead skin cells in the top layer of skin are removed, a new layer of skin with your original pore appearance will show. The effect is, pores that were previously clogged and look large will appear smaller.

In addition, skincare containing retinol which is commonly known in the form of a night cream can also fight the effects of aging and prevent acne.

2. Water based moisturizer

Moisturizer is mandatory skin care for all skin types. Even so, many people with oily skin often mistakenly think that moisturizer makes skin oilier. This assumption is wrong.

Especially for people with oily skin types, you shouldn't forget to use a moisturizer to help "shrink" pores. Without the help of a moisturizer, your skin can actually produce more oil.

If your skin is oily, the key is to use a water-based moisturizer so that the facial appearance doesn't look more shiny and makes pores appear bigger.

3. Sunscreen

Apart from protecting the skin from sun exposure, sunscreen or sunscreen is one skincare which can help shrink facial pores.

The more often and longer the skin is left unprotected, the more damaged it will be. Long-term sun exposure can decrease the natural elasticity of the skin. If the skin is not tight, the pores on the face will look bigger than they should be.

Never forget to apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30-50 evenly to the skin of your face and neck every day before leaving the house. Keep using sunscreen even though the weather is cloudy or even rainy.

4. Exfoliator products that contain AHA and BHA

To help "shrink" pores, the American Academy of Dermatology (ADA) recommends skincare which aims to remove dead skin cells (exfoliant) and contain alpha-hydroxy AC ID (AHA) or beta-hydroxy acid (BHA). The ADA also recommends regular exfoliating 1-2 times a week. Exfoliating can help get rid of dead skin debris and dirt that clogs your pores.

However, if you still have acne, don't use this skincare just yet. Exfoliating the sensitive and inflamed layers of skin can actually make acne worse. BHA (salicylic acid) should also not be used if you are allergic to aspirin.
