Healthy adults usually urinate 6-8 times a day. Some people may urinate up to 10 times per day, but this is still relatively normal as long as there are no accompanying complaints.
When viewed from the number, the normal urine volume from the body ranges from 400 to 2,000 mL. This estimate refers to an average water intake of 2,000 mL, according to the recommendation to meet fluid needs during the day.
You could say you urinate too often if the frequency exceeds 10 times in a 24 hour period. Also pay attention to the amount of urine that comes out. A urine volume of more than 2,500 mL per day indicates that you have polyuria (frequent urination).
Symptoms of frequent urination include increased thirst and excessive appetite. Meanwhile, the cause of frequent urination is drinking too much water and the possibility of a problem with the prostate organ.
Polyuria is a condition when the body produces excess urine. As a result of polyuria, you urinate more often and have difficulty holding it in. This condition can get worse if there is a problem with the bladder such as an overactive bladder (overactive bladder) or urinary incontinence.
Polyuria is not a dangerous condition. However, if you do, it will be more difficult for you to control the urge to urinate. Polyuria that is left alone can have the following effects.
1. Dehydration
If you urinate constantly without drinking enough water, you can lose a lot of body fluids and become prone to dehydration. Dehydration can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on how much fluid your body is losing.
Symptoms of mild and moderate dehydration include:
- feel thirsty,
- dry mouth, lips, and skin,
- dark yellow urine,

2. Decreased sleep quality
People with polyuria are prone to nocturia, which is a condition in which you urinate frequently at night. The feeling of wanting to pee is often unstoppable, so you have to wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.
Unlike others, those with nocturia may get up more than three times just to urinate. This condition occurs almost every night and if left untreated, the impact will certainly affect the quality of sleep and health.
Over time, you can get less sleep and show symptoms such as:
- frequent yawning and drowsiness,
- less productive at work,
- hard to concentrate,
- irritability and fatigue,
- mood bad, and
- lack of motivation.
According to the National Association for Continence, nocturia should not be tolerated because it can affect physical and psychological functions. Lack of sleep due to frequent urination at night can have long-term effects such as:
- decreased physical abilities,
- decreased ability to think,
- increased risk of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, as well
- decreases the general quality of life.
3. Hypernatremia
Hypernatremia is the medical term for indicating sodium levels that are too high in the blood. Sodium is an essential nutrient required for various body functions. The level in your blood depends on how much fluid you have in your body.
Hypernatremia occurs when the body loses a lot of water or gets too much sodium intake. The amount of body fluids is too little and cannot compensate for the high levels of total sodium.
Under normal conditions, the body will overcome this by sending signals to the brain. The brain takes this as a sign that the body needs more water. The water will later dissolve excess sodium and excrete it through urine.
Most cases of hypernatremia are mild and harmless. You may feel very thirsty and a little lethargic. However, this condition still needs to be treated to prevent more severe complications.
Sodium is needed to carry out muscle and nerve functions. Once hypernatremia becomes severe, the muscles of the body can twitch or go into spasm. In rare cases, severe hypernatremia can lead to severe seizures leading to coma.
