During the post-dengue fever recovery period, you will immediately want to do your normal activities and hope not to experience this disease anymore. Unfortunately, some people still experience dengue fever (DHF) repeatedly. For that, know the factors that cause and what you need to pay attention to so you don't experience dengue fever repeatedly.

Are there factors that cause recurrent dengue fever?

In fact, so far there are no definite factors or causes that make a person prone to recurring dengue fever. However, it can be ascertained, the condition of decreased immunity and the high level of exposure in a place with dengue hemorrhagic fever epidemiology are risk factors for someone to come back with the dengue virus.

Is someone who has had dengue fever more at risk of recurring dengue?

Someone who has previously had dengue fever should have a better tolerance level than those who have never had dengue before.

This is because, in general, the body will naturally produce antibodies as part of the immune system or the immune system after being exposed to a virus which is useful for fighting the virus at a later date if it is re-exposed.

However, the dengue virus (DHF) is quite unique. The dengue virus is divided into four serotypes (types) namely DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. This allows a person to experience recurrent dengue with different types.

In other words, those of you who have experienced dengue fever may be more tolerant of certain types of viruses that cause dengue, but may come back with dengue easily due to exposure to a different type of virus.

In addition, the virus that causes recurrent dengue can cause more severe symptoms because the immune system will overreact. Generally, if a person is attacked by a different virus that causes DHF, the risk of death is higher than that of the previous infection.

Tips to prevent recurrent dengue fever

The important thing for people with dengue fever during the recovery period is to replace or increase the intake of fluids needed by the body. It is easier for DHF patients to lose fluids due to symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.

Then, prevention efforts are also important and need to be done to avoid recurring dengue.

As previously explained, the main risk factors for recurring dengue fever are immune conditions and high exposure to a certain place. Here are some things you can do to prevent recurring dengue:

Maintain food intake

If the person with DHF is still recovering, relatives or family need to take precautions by reducing exposure to the virus that causes DHF and providing food that is easy to digest but rich in nutrients. Such as:

  • Porridge. Rich in water to replace fluids and easier to digest.
  • Spinach. Contains iron and omega 3 which are good for blood formation.
  • Red meat. High in iron which is needed for blood formation.
  • Coconut water. Contains electrolytes to replace lost body fluids.
  • Guava juice. High in vitamin C (higher than oranges) and contains thrombinol which can stimulate thrombopoietin. Thrombopoietin is a hormone that regulates platelet production.

Reducing exposure and the mosquito population that causes DHF

Some things you can do to reduce the spread of the virus that causes recurrent dengue include:

  • Using curtains or mosquito nets when sleeping
  • Use a mosquito bite repellent lotion
  • Wear more closed clothes

The Indonesian Ministry of Health has also frequently conducted outreach in order to prevent an increase in the mosquito population with 3M Plus actions, namely:

  • Drain. Activities to clean / drain places that are often used as water reservoirs, such as bathtubs, and toren or water drums.
  • Close. Don't forget to always close tightly any water storage places such as bathtubs or water drums.
  • Reuse. You are advised to reuse or recycle used items that have the potential to become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

For the word "plus" what is meant is an effort to take precautions by sprinkling larvicide powder in water reservoirs, planting mosquito repellent plants, including using mosquito nets and using mosquito repellents.
