2-4 grams are used in 2-4 separate doses. Each dose is dissolved in 100-500 milliliter (mL) of intravenous fluid and is given intravenously with an intravenous needle for 1-2 hours.

8 grams are used in a single dose administered intravenously for 30-60 minutes before surgery.
Adult dose for kidneys that are not functioning properly
8 mg dose mixed with 500 mL of intravenous fluid which is given as much as 10-15 mL per minute into the body through a vein with an IV needle.
