What is moclobemide for?

Moclobemide is a drug that is often prescribed for people with depression or social anxiety disorder, especially when other treatments have not proven successful.

How is moclobemide used?

Before starting treatment, read the printed information pamphlet from the box and any additional information provided. This pamphlet will provide more information about moclobemide and will provide a comprehensive list of the side effects you may experience after taking it.

Take moclobemide appropriately according to your doctor's advice. Usually two doses are prescribed every day. You may be asked to take one or two tablets for each dose. There are two levels of tablets available - 150 mg and 300 mg.

Take moclobemide with meals, or after a snack.

If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember (if it's not almost time for the next dose). Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose.

How is moclobemide stored?

This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. Observe the storage instructions on the product package or ask your pharmacist. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.

What is the moclobemide dosage for adults?

Oral

Depression

Adults: Initially, 300 mg per day in separate doses; increase to 600 mg per day according to patient response.

Treatment: 150 mg per day.

Liver disorders: reduce to ½ or 1/3 the recommended dose.

Oral

Social anxiety disorder

Adults: initially, 300 mg per day; increase to 600 mg per day in 2 separate doses after 3 days. Continue for 8-12 weeks.

Liver disorders: reduce to ½ or 1/3 the recommended dose.

What is the dose of moclobemide for children?

The dosage for children has not been determined. Consult a doctor for more information.

Side effects

What side effects can moclobemide experience?

This medicine may initially cause dizziness, nervousness, lightheadedness, difficulty sleeping and nausea as the body adjusts to the medication.

Other side effects reported include sweating, loss of appetite, dry mouth, anxiety, or blurred vision.

If these effects persist or are bothersome, tell your doctor.

To avoid dizziness and the feeling of fainting when rising from a sitting or lying position, get up slowly.

Tell your doctor if you have a fast / irregular heartbeat, stomach pain, chest tightness, sudden and severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, disorientation, slurred speech, changes in habits, fever, and rash.

Precautions & Warnings

What should be known before using moclobemide?

Before using it, tell your doctor and pharmacist if:

• You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
• You have a thyroid problem.
• Troubled liver work.
• You have bipolar disorder or especially feel irritable or confused.
• You're told you have a tumor in the adrenal gland, called a phaeochromocytoma.
• You have had an allergic reaction to a drug.
• You are currently taking other medications, including over-the-counter medicines such as herbal and traditional medicines.

Is moclobemide safe for pregnant and lactating women?

There are no adequate studies regarding the risks of using this drug in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Always consult your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before using this medication. This drug is included in the risk of pregnancy category B according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

What medicines may interact with moclobemide?

Drug interactions may change how medications work or increase the risk of serious side effects. This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. Do not start, stop, or change your dose without your doctor's approval.

This medicine should not be used in combination with the following drugs because very serious interactions may occur: apraclonidine, brimonidine, bethanidine, bupropion, buspirone, carbamazepine, dextromethorphan, entacapone, herbal products (eg ma huang), indoramine, meperidine, papaverine, sibutramine, antidepressants SSRIs (eg fluoxetine, citalopram), sympathomimetics (eg methylphenidate, ephedrine), tolcapone, tricyclic antidepressants (eg amitriptyline, doxepin), “triptans” (eg sumatriptan, zolmitriptan). If you are currently using the above drugs, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting moclobemide.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor about all the drugs you use (both prescription and nonprescription), especially: levodopa, insulin, and oral diabetes drugs, other MAO inhibitors (examples: furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine), sedatives, sleeping pills, blood pressure medication. Do not start or stop medications without the approval of your doctor or pharmacist.

Can food or alcohol interact with moclobemide?

Certain drugs cannot be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Talk to your healthcare professional about using your medication with food, alcohol, or cigarettes.

What health conditions may interact with moclobemide?

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of the drug. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

• Hypertension — may make the condition worse
• Liver disease — effects may increase due to slower removal of the drug from the body

Overdose

What should I do in an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (112) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Do not double up on a dose to make up for a missed dose.
