Functions & Usage
What is Nedocromil used for?
Nedocromil is a drug used to treat inflammation. These drugs work by preventing the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.
Inhaled nedocromil is also used to prevent asthma attacks and other conditions involving inflammation of the lung tissue.
Nedocromil is also used for other reasons not listed in this article.
How do you use Nedocromil?
Nedocromil inhaler is used exactly as directed by your doctor. Read the information that came with your inhaler. If you do not understand the instructions, ask the pharmacist, nurse, or doctor.
If you are also taking a bronchodilator such as albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin), pirbuterol (Maxair), or bitolterol (Tornalate), then use the bronchodilator first, then use the nedocromil inhaler. Using drugs in this order can give nedocromil a way to your lungs.
Shake the inhaler several times then open the lid. Exhale. For best results, position the inhaler 1 to 2 inches in front of the open mouth or pass the spacer to the inhaler and place the spacer in your mouth, over the tongue over the teeth. Take slow, deep breaths as you push the can. Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly. If you put your inhaler directly into your mouth, you may not receive the right amount of medicine because the medicine will push the back of your tongue and or your throat. If you are using the inhaler directly to the mouth, make sure that it is over the tongue and over the teeth.
If your dose contains more than 1 puff on the other, wait for at least 1 full minute after each puff, then repeat the procedure.
It is very important that you use the nedocromil inhaler correctly so that the medicine reaches your lungs. Your doctor may want you to use a spacer for your inhaler. Consult your doctor about how to use the correct inhaler.
Do not use this medication for more than the recommended dose for you, but use it consistently, as recommended, even though you feel better. It will take perhaps 1 week or longer before you feel the optimal efficacy of this medication. Consult your doctor if symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.
Nedocromil inhalers will not stop the onset of symptoms once they have started and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks. This drug is used to prevent attacks from recurring. Always carry other drugs to deal with attacks.
Continue with taking the oral steroid medication (pill or liquid) your doctor recommends. Nedocromil inhaler is not a substitute for oral steroids.
Seek medical help if you notice that you have used more asthma medication than you should in a 24 hour period. Increased need for medication could be an early sign of a serious asthma attack.
