What is Onglyza for?

Onglyza is a drug that is used in conjunction with a diet and exercise program to help control blood sugar in patients with type two diabetes. This drug is not used for people with type 1 diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar levels can help people with diabetes avoid the dangers of kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, limb amputation, and sexual function problems. Proper blood sugar control can also reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in diabetes patients.

Onglyza is a trademark of saxagliptin. That is, this drug uses saxagliptin as its main active ingredient. Saxagliptin in Onglyza belongs to the class of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor treatment or often shortened to DPP-4. The way it works is by increasing the body's natural substances called incretins. Therefore, this treatment is also called mimetic incretin.

Incretins in the body help control blood sugar by increasing the release of the amount of insulin, especially after eating. Incretins also help reduce sugar production by the liver.

What are the rules for drinking Onglyza?

Take Onglyza as recommended by your doctor. Also read the instruction sheet listed on the packaging of your medicine. Onglyza is an oral medication that can be taken with or without food. This medicine is usually taken once a day.

Take this medicine by swallowing it whole immediately with the help of a little drinking water. The manufacturer recommends not to split or destroy this drug. Even so, there are many similar drugs (tablets immediate release) which can be split for consumption. Follow your doctor's recommendations for taking this drug.

Your doctor may give you a low dose at the start of treatment to see how your body responds to Onglyza and increase it gradually. Follow the advice given by your doctor regarding the dosage given. Do not change the dose or stop medication without consulting your doctor even if you feel better.

What are the rules for storing Onglyza?

Store Onglyza at room temperature, no more than 30 degrees. Avoid storing this medication in a place exposed to direct sunlight and heat. Do not store it in a place with high humidity, such as the bathroom. Read the storage instructions listed on the medicine packaging. Make sure the bottles stay tightly closed when stored. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.

What medicines may interact with Onglyza?

Overdose

What should I do if I overdose on Onglyza?

Immediately call for emergency medical assistance (119) or the nearest hospital emergency room immediately when experiencing symptoms of an overdose. Overdose symptoms can include decreased blood sugar characterized by weakness, blurred vision, sweating, shortness of breath, tremors, stomach pain, confusion, seizures, and loss of consciousness.

What if I forget my medication schedule?

If you forget your scheduled medication, take it as soon as you remember. If the distance is too close to the next schedule, ignore the missed dose and continue taking the medication on the original schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for the missed dose.
