Patient named Tang (56) in Anyue City, Sichuan Province, China, was diagnosed positive for COVID-19 after repeatedly getting negative test results. There are also two other positive cases that were not predicted beforehand. How could this happen?
These pliers had been through the incubation period and were quarantined for three weeks and underwent eight tests, all of which ended negative. Only at the ninth examination, Tang tested positive for COVID-19.
The odd results of the COVID-19 tests and tests were not unique to Tang. In Germany, two people tested positive for COVID-19 even though they did not show any symptoms and had undergone a period of quarantine.
A 70-year-old grandfather in Hubei, China, tested positive for the infection after being exposed to a positive patient 27 days ago. Even though the incubation period set by WHO is only 14 days.

Tang works as a dishwasher at a hotel in Chongqing. He returned to his hometown of Anyue on January 23 to celebrate Chinese New Year with his family.
In early February, one of Tang's co-workers was diagnosed with COVID-19, which required Tang to be quarantined. Tang began quarantine on February 2 and underwent a series of rigorous medical examinations and observations.
Within 14 days (February 7 to 21), Ms. Tang underwent eight examinations swab throat (throat mucosal sampling). From the sample, a lab test was then carried out Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and all the results tested negative for COVID-19.
Although the eight test results stated negative, Tang had pneumonia, which is a symptom of COVID-19 infection.
On Friday, February 21, Tang was transferred to another hospital in downtown Ziyang. In this hospital, Tang was later declared a positive patient infected with COVID-19 after conducting a more in-depth clinical trial and 9th laboratory test.
This means that Tang has passed almost three weeks of quarantine and has only recently tested positive for COVID-19.

The odd COVID-19 test and examination results were not unique to Tang. In Germany, there are two positive COVID-19 patients even though they have no symptoms and have passed the incubation period at the quarantine center for one week.
This report is written in New England Journal of Medicine by a research team led by Dr. Sebastian Hoehl of Frankfurt University Hospital.
The two positive people are part of 126 German citizens who were evacuated from Wuhan, China in early February, Saturday (1/2). They were successfully flown to Frankfurt after passing the series screening signs and symptoms of COVID-19 such as sore throat, fever, pneumonia, cough, runny nose, diarrhea, and muscle aches.
For all the evacuated residents - except for one person who refused - the German government carried out laboratory tests on throat mucosal samples using the RT-PCR method.
From the results of these tests, two people tested positive for COVID-19, and surprisingly these two people were actually in good health. For more accurate results, the medical team double-checked and the results still indicate positive exposure.
The two people are a 44 year old woman and a 58 year old boy. They have undergone seven days of quarantine, and still do not show any symptoms of illness after testing positive and undergoing isolation and treatment.
"They did not get sick and one of them had only a faint rash," the report wrote.
Another fact, the throat mucosal samples under study also grew on a laboratory dish. This shows that even though these two people do not show symptoms of illness, their exposure to the virus has the potential to infect other people.
From these results, Hoehl and the researchers emphasized that the process screening signs and symptoms are ineffective and detects COVID-19. It takes a comprehensive laboratory examination to determine whether a patient is positive for COVID-19 or not.
The 70-year-old grandfather tested positive for COVID-19 but did not show any symptoms until the 27th day
A 70-year-old grandfather in Hubei Province, China tested positive for COVID-19 but did not show symptoms until the 27th day. This grandfather surnamed Jiang on January 24 came into contact with his brother who tested positive for COVID-19.
Reported by the Japan Times, Jiang only developed a fever 27 days later, namely on Thursday, February 20. He was then rushed to the hospital and immediately underwent laboratory tests. A day later the test results came out and Jiang's patient tested positive for COVID-19.
This unusual case highlights the new fact that signs and symptoms in people infected with COVID-19 can appear beyond the incubation period.
The epidemiological parameters of COVID-19 that have been set by Indonesia for the virus incubation period (time from exposure to development of symptoms) of the virus are estimated to be a maximum of 14 days. The determination of the period varies slightly for each country or organization.
- The World Health Organization determines the incubation period from 2 to 10 days.
- China National Health Commission (NHC) estimates the incubation period to be between 10 and 14 days.
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) The United States specifies an estimate of between 2 and 14 days.
With the occurrence of cases outside of this theory some countries and organizations increased the incubation period to at least 29 days. Among them are also continuing to carry out laboratory tests on people who have interacted with positive patients or who were evacuated from China.
While the examination swab throat with the RT-PCR method this was not carried out on 238 Indonesians who were evacuated from Wuhan. 238 This person only passed the incubation period of 14 days of quarantine.
