What is Pyrantel for?

Pirantel is "deworming," or anti-worm medicine. This medicine prevents the growth and reproduction of worms in your body. Pirantel is used to treat infections caused by worms such as pinworms and roundworms.

Pirantel can also be used for purposes other than those listed in the medication guide.

How do you use Pyrantel?

Use pyrantel exactly as directed by your doctor or as directed on the packaging label. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

Take each dose with a full glass of water. Pirantel can be used with or without food at any time of the day.

Shake the suspension well before measuring a dose. Use a spoon, glass, or dropper (not a regular tablespoon) as a measuring device to make sure that you are taking the correct dose of medication. Ask your pharmacist where you can get a dose meter if you don't have one.

Fasting, laxatives, and laxatives will not help cure this infection.

Treatment of family members and other loved ones may be needed. Pinworms spread very easily to other people when they come in close contact with an infected person.

Toilets must be disinfected daily and clothes, sheets, towels and pajamas must be changed and washed daily.

What is the pyrantel dosage for adults?

Normal Dosage for Adults Infected with Pinworms:

11 mg / kg standard (maximum 1 g) orally once. Repeat dosage in 2 weeks.

Normal dosage for adults infected with pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis):

11 mg / kg standard (maximum 1 g) orally once. Repeat dosage in 2 weeks.

Normal Dosage for Adults Infected with Mine Worms (Necator or Ancylostoma):

11 mg / kg standard (maximum 1 g) orally every day for 3 days.

Normal Dosage for Adults Infected with Ascariasis:

11 mg / kg standard (maximum 1 g) orally once.

Normal Dosage for Adults Infected with Trichostrongylosis:

11 mg / kg standard (maximum 1 g) orally once.

Normal Dose for Adults Infected with Moniliformis:

11 mg / kg standard (maximum 1 g) orally once. Repeat the dose twice at 2 week intervals.

What is the pyrantel dosage for children?

Normal Dosage for Children Infected with Pinworms:

> = 2 years: 11 mg / kg standard (maximum 1 g) once. Repeat dosage in 2 weeks.

Pyrantel side effects

What side effects can be experienced due to pyrantel?

Seek emergency medical help if you experience an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, shortness of breath, closure of the throat, or hives).

In addition, less serious side effects are possible. Continue to use pyrantel and talk to your doctor if you experience:

• nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea, or decreased appetite

• headache
• drowsiness and dizziness
• insomnia
• rash

Pyrantel Drug Interactions

What medicines might interact with Pyrantel?

Theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theolair, Theochron, Theo-Bid, Elixophylline, others) may have dangerous side effects when taken during treatment with pyrantel. Your doctor may want to monitor your theophylline levels.

Medicines other than those listed here may also interact with pyrantel. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking prescriptions or medicines.

Can food or alcohol interact with Pyrantel?

Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider

Pyrantel overdose

What should I do in an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (112) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
