Although typhoid, aka typhoid fever, is a disease that is already "common" for Indonesian people, this is not something that can be underestimated. Your body is at risk of lack of fluids and several complications that can arise after you get typhus, so handling of typhus must be done appropriately and immediately. But does typhus treatment really need to be treated in a hospital (inpatient or hospitalized) or can it be at home?
What is typhus?
Typhus or typhoid fever is an acute bacterial infection caused by the presence of bacteria salmonella typhi on the food or drink you consume. People and health workers actually call it typhus symptoms more often.
This happens because in general, the body condition that you are tested is still a symptom that occurs 1-2 weeks after the bacteria enter your body (incubation period). These symptoms include:
- Fever up to 40 degrees Celsius
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Stomach ache
- Loss of appetite
- Diarrhea
- The appearance of a small pink rash
You should immediately get checked out if you experience the symptoms above, especially if you have just returned from a trip, because as previously explained, prompt treatment of typhoid symptoms can reduce your chances of experiencing complications of typhus.
But if it turns out that the symptoms you are feeling are typhus, and after you have done several tests on your blood, feces, urine and bone marrow samples that are positive, it could be that the typhus you are experiencing is no longer just a symptom.
How to cure typhus?
Typhus treatment can actually be done both at home and in the hospital. Most importantly, typhus treatment can give you complete rest for several weeks until your condition is fully recovered, because the symptoms caused by typhus will generally make you feel completely weak.
In addition to complete rest, you must also be able to ensure that your body's fluid levels are sufficient, and that the cleanliness and nutrition of the food and drinks you consume are maintained. Remember, the cause of your developing typhus is unclean food and drink, and you can pass the bacteria on to the people around you.
When should you be hospitalized?
Your typhoid treatment should be treated in a hospital if:
- The symptoms you are experiencing worsen, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and swelling in the stomach.
- Typhus patients are still children or toddlers.
- Typhus attacks actually develop into complications of typhus in the digestive system, in the form of internal bleeding and perforation that spreads to the surrounding tissues.
In addition, diseases caused by bacterial attacks will usually be treated with antibiotics. If your typhoid treatment is carried out in a hospital, the treatment you receive will usually be in the form of antibiotic injection and the introduction of nutrients and fluids into your body through an IV needle. Meanwhile, if your typhus treatment is carried out at home, antibiotics will be given by mouth (oral).
