However, as you get older, less T cells are formed because of this thymus (the small glands behind the breastbone) shrink. This makes the immune system less efficient, especially in dealing with new viruses. As a result, the body's resistance is only able to fight against bacteria and viruses that have previously attacked, but is unable to deal with new bacteria and viruses.

What are the consequences if the body's immune system gets old?

An aging immune system can certainly have a negative impact on your immune system, especially in fighting bacterial, viral, toxin, and other infections. Some of the consequences of an aging immune system are:

1. Less optimal in responding to vaccines

Vaccines are antigenetic substances that are used to produce active immunity against an infection or disease, so that they can prevent disease in the body.

However, as you age, your body will be less effective in responding to the vaccines you receive. This happens because the older you get, the T cells produced by the body are less. Therefore, most vaccines need new drugs in order to work more effectively.

2. More prone to illness

It is clear that if your immune system is weakened, then your body will be more prone to illness because of the lack of the body's ability to fight disease.

3. The wound healing process is slower

As a consequence of a decreased immune system, the body will produce fewer white blood cells. As a result, the wound healing process will be slower.

How do you know when your immune system is aging?

Unfortunately, there isn't a single test that can tell you if your immune system isn't functioning optimally. However, you can measure your fitness level, among other things, by testing your body's speed, strength, explosive power, and endurance while exercising.

Then, how can you stay healthy even though your age continues to grow?

Of course, as a complex system, the immune system needs good maintenance to keep it functioning optimally even as you age. Some simple things you can do include getting enough sleep, avoiding stress, exercising regularly, eating healthy and nutritious foods, and avoiding smoking.
