What is ergometrine for?
Ergometrine is generally used to prevent and treat bleeding after childbirth or abortion. Can also be used for other conditions as directed by the doctor.
Ergonovine is a uterine stimulant. Ergonovine works by increasing uterine contractions, which can reduce blood loss after delivery.
How should I use ergometrine?

What is the dose of ergometrine for adults?
Oral
Postpartum and post-abortion bleeding
0.2 - 0.4 mg 2 to 4 times daily until the danger of uterine atony and bleeding is gone (usually 48 hours). Maximum duration: 1 week postpartum.
Intramuscular
Management is active at the third level in labor
500 mcg is given with 5 units of oxytocin after delivery of the baby's anterior shoulder or immediately after delivery.
Intravenous
Excessive bleeding in the uterus
200 mcg by IV infusion for at least 1 minute. Can be continued with a drinking dose of 200-400 mch 2-4 times a day until the danger of uterine atony and bleeding disappears (usually 48 hours).

What should be known before using ergometrine?
Before using Ergometrine, tell your doctor if:
- You have an allergy to the composition of Ergonovine
- You are pregnant
- You are currently taking HIV protease inhibitors (delavirdine, indinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir), efavirenz, a ketolide antibiotic (eg, telithromycin), a macrolide antibiotic (eg, clarithromycin, erythromycin), or selective 5-HT agonists (eg, sumatriptan, eletriptan)
Is ergometrine safe for pregnant and lactating women?

Can food or alcohol interact with ergometrine?

Overdose symptoms can include chest pain, coma, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, nausea, numbness, chills, tingling, seizures, severe headache or dizziness, vomiting, weak pulse.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
