What is isoprenaline for?

Isoprenaline is commonly used to treat certain heart disorders (such as heart attack, congestive heart failure), blood vessel problems (shock), and some conditions of an irregular heartbeat (heart block). This medication is also used to relax narrowed airways. Isoprenaline can also be used to treat other conditions on the advice of a doctor.
Isoprenaline is a sympathomimetic drug that works to relax blood vessels and help pump blood to work better. This medication acts as an airway relaxant so that you can breathe more easily.

How is isoprenaline used?

Use isoprenaline only as directed by your doctor. Read the instructions for use listed on the product label for the correct dosage.

Isoprenaline is usually available as a solution that is given by injection at a doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. If you are taking isoprenaline at home, follow the rules given by your doctor or pharmacist before starting treatment.
If you notice discoloration or foreign particles in the package, or the product package seal is damaged, do not use the product.

How is isoprenaline stored?

This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. Observe the storage instructions on the product package or ask your pharmacist. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

What is the isoprenaline dosage for adults?

Bronchospasm during anesthesia

0.01-0.02 mg mg (0.5-1 ml of 1: 50,000 solution), repeat as needed

Emergency management of cardiac arrhythmias

IV bolus injection: Initially, 0.02-0.06 mg (1-3 ml of 1: 50,000 solution). Follow-up dose: 0.01-0.2 mg.

IV infusion: Initially, 5 mcg / minute. Follow-up dosage is based on patient response; average rate: 2-20 mcg / min.

Parenteral

Postoperative cardiac patient with bradycardia

For non emergency situations. Initial dose: 0.2 mg via IM or SC. Follow-up dose range: 0.02-1 mg (via IM) or 0.15-0.2 mg (via SC).

Temporary management of stage 3 AV block to insertion of a pacemaker

2-10 mcg / minute via IV infusion. Adjust the follow-up dose according to the progress of the heart rate and the response of the patient

Total heart block after ventricular septal defect (VSD)

0.04-0.06 mg (2-3 mL of the 1: 50,000 solution) as a bolus dose.

Intravenous

Additional therapy in shock

0.5-5 mcg / minute, adjust the further dose according to the progress of the patient's response.

At an advanced stage: 30 mcg / minute is commonly used. Not recommended for use as a 1 hour slow infusion in septic shock patients

Diagnosis of mitral regurgitation: 4 mcg / min given by infusion.

Diagnosis of coronary heart disease or lesions: infusion 1-3 mcg / min.

Initial dose: 0.1 mcg / kg / minute. Follow-up dose range: 0.1-1 mcg / kg / min.

0.029 mcg / kg / minute via IV infusion.

Children and toddlers: 0.01-0.03 mg (0.5-1.5 mL of 1: 50,000 solution) as a bolus dose.

In what dosage is isoprenaline available?

Isoproterenol Hydrochloride

• injection (1: 5,000 solution) 0.2 mg / mL isoproterenol hydrochloride
• injection (1: 50,000) 0.02 mg / mL isoproterenol hydrochloride

Isuprel

• injection (1: 5,000 solution) 0.2 mg / mL isoproterenol hydrochloride

Medihaler-ISO

• aerosol contains 80 mcg of isoproterenol sulfate / actuation

Isoprenaline side effects

What side effects can be experienced due to isoprenaline?

Stop using the inhaled drug isoprenaline and seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

• signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• chest pain or abnormal heartbeat

Other more common side effects include:

• headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, or insomnia
• trembling (tremors) or attacks of nervousness
• sweating
• nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; or
• mouth feels dry

Continue to treat isoprenaline if any of the above conditions occur to you.
Not everyone experiences the above side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have concerns about certain side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Isoprenaline Drug Warnings and Cautions

What should be known before using isoprenaline?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to the support ingredient isoprenaline
• You have any of the conditions of an irregular heartbeat (such as tachyarrhythmia, some ventricular arrhythmias), adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma), or chest pain due to angina
• your heart rate is fast or you have heart block caused by digoxin poisoning
• You are currently taking droxidopa or epinephrine

Is isoprenaline safe for pregnant and lactating women?

There are no adequate studies regarding the risks of using this drug in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Always consult your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before using this medication.

This drug is included in the risk of pregnancy category C according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

What medicines may interact with isoprenaline?

Isoprenaline overdose

What should I do in an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (112) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget a dose of this medicine, use it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
