Farts are often considered embarrassing and even annoying and disrespectful. Especially if the fart makes a loud noise and smells bad. However, it turns out that smelling farts is not entirely bad and can actually be good for health, you know!
Smelling farts has a good effect on health
This fact was discovered by a study conducted by a collaborative team from the University of Exeter and the University of Texas. Hydrogen sulfide, a major component of the gas that makes farts smell bad, can actually do wonders for your body.
The foundation behind this research is a theory which states that the energy-producing cells in the body called mitochondria will work better and prevent them from being damaged if exposed to this gas.
The researchers also created a compound called AP39 which is similar to hydrogen sulfide. Then, this AP39 is inserted into the cells that are in the blood vessels.
The research was conducted using animals as test objects.
Initial results showed as many as 80% of mitochondrial cells exposed to AP39 survived longer. Chances are, this could be due to the ability of hydrogen sulfide to reduce the effects of oxidative stress on cells.
It should be noted that when the mitochondrial cells in the blood vessels are damaged due to certain conditions. These cells will use the body's own enzymes to produce hydrogen sulfide.
When the damage gets worse, the mitochondria cannot produce enough gas to handle it, as a result the disease is getting worse.
With more exposure to hydrogen sulfide contained in fart gas, mitochondrial cells will be helped in their function to control oxidative stress (gas incorporation) in the body that can cause disease.
In various studies conducted in the following years, exposure to AP39 to body cells demonstrated its potential to reduce blood pressure.
The exposure also widens the blood vessels to overcome the problem of obstructed blood circulation which can lead to heart disease and stroke.
Other uses, AP39 as artificial hydrogen sulfide also has the potential to prevent kidney damage, keep the brain from the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's, and reduce the effects of aging.
Tips for not farting too often
It is normal for someone to pass gas 5-15 times a day. Most fart gas is also odorless and doesn't always make a sound.
However, farting, which is often seen as a negative thing, can make you or those around you feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. Therefore, here are some tips that you can follow to make your wind more controlled.
Avoid consuming foods that contain gas
Some foods can trigger an increase in gas production from the body.
To reduce wind, it's better to reduce the consumption of gas-containing foods such as beans, soft drinks such as soda, and some starchy foods such as potatoes, corn, and sweet potatoes.
Stay away from food allergens
The body's response when experiencing allergies is different for each person. However, not infrequently allergies or food intolerance can cause gas and effects such as bloating, nausea, and diarrhea.
The reason is, the unpleasant smell of fart can be a sign that your body is intolerant of certain foods. It is better to avoid and consume foods that will not cause stomach problems.
Cut down on chewing gum
Usually, chewing gum is a solution if you want to make your breath fresher. Unfortunately, you will actually make it easier for air to enter your body when you chew.
The buildup of air in the body will become a gas which affects how often you pass wind.
