Earlier this year the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) revealed the discovery of a new type of drug in the South Tangerang area, Banten. Drugs known as blue sapphires come in many forms, from powders to liquids. According to experts, taking this illegal drug has the same effect as consuming methamphetamine or ecstasy. What are the characteristics and effects of this new drug? Check out the following explanation.

What is blue sapphire?

Reporting from the official website of the National Narcotics Agency, blue sapphire is a synthetic (man-made) compound from catinone-type drugs. Katinon itself is a stimulant compound found in a shrub called khat.

This shrub grows in grasslands in eastern Africa and in southern Arab countries. In the area of origin, khat leaves are often chewed to get a stimulant effect, similar to the tradition of betel nut in Indonesia.

Catinones will be blended again with other chemicals in the laboratory to produce a new synthetic psychoactive substance called 4-chloromethkatinone (4-CMC) which is marketed under the name blue sapphire. This synthetic product is even more dangerous than the simple catinones contained in the khat plant.

Catinone-type synthetic drugs have been increasingly circulating recently because the price is relatively cheaper than drugs in general. In addition, because it is still a new type, in various parts of the world this drug has no legal umbrella. However, in Indonesia itself 4-CMC has been registered as a class I drug. Its sale, distribution and use are legally prohibited.

The characteristics of blue sapphire drugs

To avoid the distribution and use of this new drug, you must understand what its features are. According to the National Narcotics Agency, blue sapphires are usually circulated in bottles in the form of a blue liquid like sapphire. However, the National Narcotics Agency also found other variations of the 4-CMC drug in the form of clear, brown, and yellow liquids.

So far, drug dealers sell this product by mixing it into drinks. Be it alcoholic or not. The drink with a 4-CMC mixture is known as Snow White.

Apart from being a blue liquid, the synthetic drug 4-CMC may also be circulating as a white crystalline powder that closely resembles bath salts. The reason is, the original form is crystal chunks such as crystal meth (meth).

The effects and dangers of using blue sapphire drugs

Blue sapphire is a psychoactive stimulant drug that can have an effect similar to methamphetamine. The dealer may promise fun effects such as being more energized, more energized, and can make you feel lighter.

Even if consumed, this illegal drug will cause the following effects:

  • euphoria
