What is Metampicillin used for?
Metampicillin is a drug to treat and prevent widespread bacterial infections. These drugs include antibiotics that work by stopping bacterial growth.
This antibiotic is used specifically for bacterial infections. And will not work for other viral infections (eg fever, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse can lead to reduced effectiveness.

Side effects
What are the possible Metampicillin side effects?
Seek immediate medical help if you have any of the following signs of an allergic reaction to Metampicillin: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Contact your doctor if you have experienced serious side effects such as the following:
- Diarrhea that is watery or bloody
- Fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms
- Bruising or bleeding easily, unusual weakness
- Urinating rarely or not at all
- Skin rash, itching, or peeling
- Agitation, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior
- Fainting or convulsions
Less serious side effects can also arise, such as:
- Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
- Vaginal itching or discharge
- Headache
- Swollen, black, or "hairy" tongue
- Thrush (white patches or inside the mouth or throat)

- Allergies, general (eg asthma, eczema, hay fever, itching), history of patients with general allergies may be more likely to experience reactions to Metampicillin
- Bleeding disorders, history of patients who have bleeding disorders who are more prone to bleeding when receiving carbenicillin, piperacillin, or ticarcillin
- Congestive heart failure (CHF)
- High blood pressure - large doses of carbenicillin or ticarcillin can worsen this condition, because these drugs contain large amounts of salt
- Cystic fibrosis - patients with cystic fibrosis can increase their risk of fever and skin rash when receiving piperacillin
- Kidney pain - patients with kidney disease are at increased risk of side effects
- Mononucleosis (“mono”) - patients with mononucleosis can have an increased risk of skin rash when receiving ampicillin, bacampicillin or pivampicillin.
- Phenylketonuria - some of the strengths of amoxicillin chewable tablets contain aspartame, which the body can convert to phenylalanine, a painful substance for patients with phenylketonuria.
- Stomach or intestinal disease, history of (especially colitis, including colitis caused by antibiotics) - patients with a history of stomach or intestinal disease may be more at risk for developing colitis when taking Metampicillin
