Functions & Usage
What is Mycophenolic Acid used for?
Mycophenolic Acid is a drug to prevent rejection of the body's systems for new organ transplants. This drug is a type of immunosuppressant drug.
Your body may “reject” an organ transplant when your immune system treats the new organ as a foreign organism. Immunosuppressants help to prevent this resistance.
Mycophenolic Acid is used to prevent your body from rejecting kidney transplants. This drug is usually given with cyclosporine and steroid drugs.
Mycophenolic Acid can also be used for purposes not listed in the medication guide.
How do I use Mycophenolic Acid?
You must remain under a doctor's care while you are using Mycophenolic Acid. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medication in amounts greater or less or for longer than recommended.
Take Mycophenolic Acid on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.
Do not crush, chew the tablet, you must swallow it whole.
Mycophenolic Acid (Myfortic) and mycophenolate mofetil (Cellcept) are not absorbed in equal portions by the body. If you switch from one brand to another, take only the tablets prescribed by your doctor. Always check your medicine refills to make sure you have received the correct brand and type of medication.
You will need regular medical tests to make sure this drug is not causing harmful effects.
If you have had hepatitis B or C disease, Mycophenolic Acid can cause the disease to come back and could even be in a worse condition. You may need blood tests to check your liver function.
How do I store Mycophenolic Acid?
This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. Observe the storage instructions on the product package or ask your pharmacist. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.
Precautions & Warnings
What should be considered before using Mycophenolic Acid?
Before using Mycophenolic Acid:
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Mycophenolate or Mycophenolic Acid, any other medicines. or if you are allergic to ingredients contained in Mycophenolate or Mycophenolic Acid products.
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist about any medications (prescription or non-prescription), vitamins, nutritional supplements, and any herbal products you are currently using or will be using. Make sure to mention the drugs on this list, if you do use them, activated charcoal; acyclovir (Zovirax); certain antibiotics such as amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (Augmentin), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), and sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim (Bactrim); azathioprine, (Azasan, Imuran); cholestyramine (Prevalite); colestipol (Colestid); ganciclovir (Cytovene, Valcyte); other drugs that suppress the body's immune power; probenecid (Probalan); rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane); pain relieving salicylates such as aspirin, choline magnesium trisalicylate (Trisalate), choline salicylate (Arthropan), diflunisal, magnesium salicylate (Doan's, others) and salsalates (Argesic, Disalcid, Salgesic); sevelamer (Renagel, Renvela); valacyclovir (Valtrex); and valganciclovir (Valcyte). In addition, tell your doctor if you are taking a combination of norfloxacin (Noroxin) and metronidazole (Flagyl). Your doctor will change the dose of your medication or take more close supervision to avoid side effects.
- If you are taking an antacid, then take it 2 hours before or 4 hours after you take Mycophenolic Acid
- Tell your doctor if you have or have had Lesch-Nyhan syndrome or Kelley-Seegmiller syndrome (an inherited disease that causes increased blood levels of certain substances, joint pain and problems with movement and behavior); anemia (red blood cell count below normal); neutropenia (white blood cell count below normal); sores or diseases related to your stomach, intestines, or digestive problems; various types of cancer or kidney or liver disease.
- Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding
- Avoid vaccinating without consulting your doctor. Ask your doctor if you should get the flu vaccine before or during your treatment because taking Mycophenolic Acid can increase your risk of infection
Is Mycophenolic Acid drug safe for pregnant and lactating women?
There are no adequate studies regarding the risks of using this drug in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Always consult your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before using this medication. This drug is included in the risk of pregnancy category D. (A = No risk, B = No risk in some studies, C = Possible risk, D = There is positive evidence of risk, X = Contraindicated, N = unknown)
It is not known whether Mycophenolic Acid passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breastfeed while using this medicine.
Side effects
What are the possible side effects of Mycophenolic Acid?
Seek immediate medical help if you experience any of the following signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Serious and sometimes fatal infections can occur during treatment with Mycophenolic Acid. Call your doctor right away if you have signs of infection such as:
- Fever, flu symptoms, runny nose or stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, swollen glands
- Stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss
- Earache, headache
- White patches or sores in the mouth or throat
- Pale skin, easy bruising or unusual bleeding
- Confusion, changes in your mental state, problems with vision, ability to speak, memory, balance, or walking
- Weakness in your legs, lack of coordination
- There is blood in your urine, pain or burning when you urinate
- Swelling, warmth, redness, or tingling around the skin wound
- A new lump or blister on your skin, or a mole that has changed in size or color
Tell your doctor right away if you experience serious side effects such as the following:
- Rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, fainting
- Coughing up blood or vomiting that looks like coffee grounds
- Bloody, black stool
- Increased thirst and urination, hot and dry skin
- Chest pain, dry cough, wheezing, feeling short of breath
- Feelings like they might pass out
- Slow or irregular heartbeat, weak pulse, tingling, extreme thirst, increased urination, discomfort in the legs, muscle weakness or a feeling of weakness
- Pancreatitis (severe pain in the upper abdomen spreading to the back, nausea and vomiting, fast heartbeat)
Less serious side effects may include:
- Constipation, weight gain
- Muscle pain, joint pain, back pain
- Dizziness, anxiety, sleep problems (insomnia)
- Swelling in the hands or feet
Not everyone experiences the following side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have concerns about certain side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider.
What health conditions can interfere with the performance of the Mycophenolic Acid drug?
Any other health conditions you have can affect the use of this drug. Always tell your doctor if you have other health problems, especially:
- Stomach ulcers or other disorders of the stomach or intestines
- viral, bacterial, or fungal infection
- rare inherited diseases of enzyme deficiency such as Lesch-Nyhan syndrome or Kelley – Seegmiller syndrome

What is the dosage of Mycophenolic Acid for adults?
Usual Adult Dose for Rejection Prophylaxis
Initial dose: 720 mg orally twice a day
Dosage should be taken on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after food intake.
Usual Elderly Dose for Rejection Prophylaxis
Dosage: 720 mg twice daily
Dosage should be taken on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after food intake.
The maximum recommended dose for use in elderly patients is 720 mg twice daily.
What is the dosage of Mycophenolic Acid for children?
Usual Children's Dose for Rejection Prophylaxis
5 years to 16 years:
Dosage: 400 mg / m2 twice daily (up to a maximum of 720 mg twice daily)
The dosage for pediatric patients with a body surface area of less than 1.19 m2 cannot be given accurately using the available formulations.
In what dosages and preparations Mycophenolic Acid is available?
Tablet, Delayed Release, Oral: 180 mg, 360 mg.
What to do in an emergency or overdose?
In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (119) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.
Overdose symptoms may include:
- Stomach ache
- Nausea
- Gag
- Heartburn
- Diarrhea
- Fever, sore throat, chills, cough and other symptoms of infection
What should I do if I forget to take medicine or forget to take medicine?
If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
