What is sodium bicarbonate used for?
Sodium bicarbonate is an antacid drug used to relieve stomach ulcers and indigestion. Sodium, which is generally in tablet and powder form, can also be referred to as baking soda. Your doctor may prescribe sodium bicarbonate to reduce the level of acid in your blood or urine related to certain health conditions.
How to use
How do you use sodium bicarbonate?
Baking soda is available in tablet and powder form which is used by mouth. Sodium bicarbonate is taken one to four times a day, depending on usage needs.

What is the sodium carbonate dosage for adults?
Dosage of sodium bicarbonate to relieve heartburn and gastric acid :
- Adults and teenagers: use 4 to 10 grams (1 to 2 ½ teaspoons) in a glass of cold water after meals. However, you shouldn't drink more than 19.5 grams (5 teaspoons) a day.
- Children 6 to 12 years of age: use 1 to 1.9 grams (¼ to ½ teaspoon) in a glass of cold water after meals.
Dosage of tablets to relieve heartburn and stomach acid:
- Adults and teenagers use 325 milligrams (mg) to 2 grams, 1-4 times a day.
- Children 6 to 12 years of age: use 520 mg. The dose can be repeated in thirty minutes.
