When groaning becomes the most comfortable and eagerly awaited activity after sex, some women curl up alone in pain because their stomachs feel bloated. Have you experienced it too? So, what exactly causes flatulence after sex?
Why is flatulence after sex?
Flatulence after sex is generally caused by too deep and repeated penetration, so that air from outside enters the abdominal cavity. This is a normal reaction and will usually subside on its own. (If not, try these ways to get rid of flatulence in 5 minutes)
However, if the flatulence is also accompanied by pain or tenderness, this is not normal. There are several serious medical conditions that can cause abdominal pain and bloating after sex. Therefore, you should immediately consult a doctor if you feel bloated after sex that does not go away.
1. Cervicitis
Cervicitis is inflammation of the cervix (cervix). Inflammation of the cervix can be caused by sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia or gonorrhea (gonorrhea).
Apart from flatulence after sex which also feels painful, other typical symptoms of cervicitis are vaginal bleeding outside of the menstrual schedule, pain during sex, and abnormal vaginal discharge. However, not all women with cervicitis experience these symptoms.
2. Ovarian cysts
Ovarian cysts are not always dangerous and can go away on their own. Most women who have ovarian cysts don't feel any symptoms. However, if the cyst is large enough, it will usually cause symptoms such as:
- Pelvic or lower abdominal pain.
- The stomach feels full or heavy.
- Bloating, including after sex.
3. Ovarian cancer
Not all cases of ovarian cancer cause abdominal pain and bloating after sex. However, that does not mean you can underestimate this condition. Ovarian cancer is prone to spread to other parts of the body, making it more difficult to treat completely.
Therefore, you need to recognize a variety of other ovarian cancer symptoms that are more common. That is:
- Stomach and back pain.
- Quite a drastic weight loss.
- Vaginal bleeding outside the time of menstruation.
- The pelvis is depressed.
- Nausea and vomiting.
4. Abnormalities in the position of the uterus
About one in 4 women has an inverted uterus or in medical terms it is called a retroverted uterus. An inverted uterus is a condition that occurs when the uterus is tilted slightly towards the pelvis. Whereas normally, the uterus tends to lean towards the stomach.
An inverted uterus usually does not cause typical symptoms. But apart from flatulence after sex, some women may also complain of pain during sex. Especially in certain positions that require women to be above men.
Not only that, this condition can also cause menstruation to feel very painful (dysmenorrhea).
5. Pelvic inflammation
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a bacterial infection that attacks the female reproductive organs; including the cervix (cervix), ovaries (ovaries), or fallopian tubes. This disease is transmitted through unprotected sex.
Many women are not aware of PID in the first place. After causing pain in the pelvic area which is quite debilitating, then it is detected.
Various symptoms that usually appear such as:
- Fever.
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding.
- Difficulty getting pregnant, due to blocked fallopian tubes.
- Pelvic pain, during sex or urinating.
6. Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition when uterine lining tissue grows outside the uterus. This tissue will also break down when you menstruate, but will not come out of the vagina. Instead, the blood gets trapped in the uterus, causing irritation and inflammation, which can lead to a series of painful symptoms.
Women with endometriosis usually experience pelvic pain as well as bloating, including after sex. Not only that, women with endometriosis usually experience heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) and feel very painful (dysmenorrhea).
7. PCOS
PCOS aka polycystic ovary syndrome is a disorder that occurs due to excess androgen hormones in a woman's body. This condition causes menstrual pain or even irregularity, making it difficult for PCOS women to get pregnant. In addition, women with PCOS are also prone to obesity and insulin resistance.
Bloating after sex is one of the symptoms of PCOS that you should be aware of.
