Propantheline is a medication to treat peptic ulcers. This drug works by reducing the production of acid in the stomach.
Propantheline can also be used with other medicines to treat excess stomach acid (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome) or certain intestinal disorders (irritable bowel syndrome). For intestinal disorders, this drug works by reducing movement of the stomach or intestines.
What are the rules for using Propantheline?
Take this medication, usually 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime or as directed by your doctor.
Follow the rules given by your doctor or pharmacist before starting treatment. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Take this medicine regularly to get optimal benefits. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time each day.

How to save Propantheline?

What is the Propantheline dosage for adults?
Dosage for Peptic Ulcer
Initial dose: 15 mg orally, taken 30 minutes before meals and 30 mg orally at bedtime (total 75 mg / day)
Patients with mild symptoms and patients with small stature can be given 7.5 mg three times a day, taken 30 minutes before meals.
Dosage for Peptic Ulcer in the elderly
Initial dose: 7.5 mg orally 3 times a day, 30 minutes before meals.
What is the dosage of Propantheline for children?
There is no provision for the dosage of this drug for children. This medicine can be dangerous for children. It is important to understand the safety of drugs before use. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Side effects
What side effects may occur due to Propantheline?
Dry mouth, reduced sweating, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, dilated pupils, nausea or vomiting, or constipation may occur. If any of these effects persist or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), liver disease, kidney disease, heart or blood vessel disease (congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, tachycardia), esophageal disorders (acid stomach), nervous disorders (autonomic neuropathy), diarrhea, respiratory disorders (asthma), mild or moderate ulcerative colitis.
Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist if you are using this medicine.
This medicine may make you dizzy, drowsy or cause blurred vision. Do not ride, use machinery, or do activities that require clear awareness or vision until you are sure you can perform these activities safely. Limit alcoholic drinks.
This medicine can reduce sweating. To prevent heat stroke, avoid feeling too hot in hot weather, in saunas and during sports or other strenuous activities.
Is Propantheline safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?
There are no adequate studies regarding the risks of using this drug in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Always consult your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before using this medication. This drug is included in the risk of pregnancy category C according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Interaction
What medicines may interact with Propantheline?
This drug is prohibited for use with the following medicines because serious interactions may occur: pramlintide.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist all medicines with or without a prescription, or herbal products you are using, especially: antihistamines (eg, diphenhydramine, meclizine), antispasmodics (eg, dicyclomine), belladonna alkaloids (eg, scopolamine, atropine), certain antiarrhythmic drugs (eg, quinidine, procainamide), certain drugs for Parkinson's disease (eg, amantadine, levodopa, benztropine, trihexyphenidyl), corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), digoxin (slow-dissolving type), drugs that affect gastric movement (eg, metoclopramide), acid-dependent drugs (eg, ketoconazole), MAO inhibitors (isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine), phenothiazines, promethazine, chlorpromazine), potassium tablets / capsules, tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline).
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are also taking drugs that cause drowsiness such as: anti-seizure drugs (eg, carbamazepine), sleeping or anxiety medications (eg, alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers (eg, meperidine, codeine), psychiatric drugs (eg, chlorpromazine, risperidone, trazodone).
Can food or alcohol interact with Propantheline?

Overdose
What should I do in an emergency or overdose?

What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
