This valve is called the esophageal sphincter. It is a channel through which food passes through the oral cavity.

The sphincter muscles relax during swallowing. When you don't swallow, this muscle will contract or tighten. When belching, this sphincter muscle needs to relax for a while to allow air to escape.

Even though it looks trivial, it is difficult to burp in fact make people feel tormented. It feels like there are air bubbles around the esophagus that are not going away. This is quite annoying and sometimes painful.
