What is the drug tibolone used for?

Tibolone is a drug to treat various symptoms that appear after menopause, including preventing the risk of osteoporosis in menopausal women.

During menopause, the amount of estrogen produced by a woman's body decreases. This can cause symptoms such as hot flushes on the face, neck and chest, neck and chest ("hot flushes"). Tibolone relieves the symptoms that occur after menopause.

Livial is different from other HRT. Instead of actual hormones (such as estrogen and progestogen) Livial contains tibolone. Your body breaks down tibolone to make hormones. The effects and benefits are the same as the combined HRT.

What are the rules for using the drug Tibolone?

The usual dosage is one tablet daily. Take this dose unless your doctor or pharmacist directs you differently.

Press the tablet so that it sticks out of the foil. Swallow the tablets with water or other drink, without chewing. Take Livial at the same time every day.

The tablet strips are marked with the day of the week. Start by taking the tablet marked today. For example, if Monday, take the tablet marked Monday in the top row of the strip. Follow the arrow until the strip is blank. Start the next strip the next day. Don't leave anything between strips or packs.

How to store tibolone?

This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. Observe the storage instructions on the product package or ask your pharmacist. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.

Side effects

What are the possible side effects of tibolone?

The following diseases were reported more frequently in women using HRT compared to women who did not use HRT:

• Breast cancer
• Abnormal growth or cancer on the lining of the uterus (endometrial hyperplasia or cancer)
• Ovarian cancer
• Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs (venous thromboembolism)
• Heart disease
• Stroke
• Memory loss is possible if HRT is started above age 65

Drug Interactions

What drugs can interfere with tibolone drugs?

Although some drugs should not be taken at the same time, in other cases some drugs can also be used together even though interactions may occur. Some medicines can interfere with Livial's effects. This may cause irregular bleeding. This applies to the following medicines:

• Medicines against blood clots (such as warfarin)
• Medicines for epilepsy (such as phenobarbital, phenytoin and carbamazepin)
• Medicines for tuberculosis (such as rifampin)
• Herbal remedies containing St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

Can certain foods and drinks interfere with the work of tibolone drugs?

Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider.

What health conditions can interfere with the performance of the drug tibolone?

Any other health conditions you have can affect the use of this drug. Always tell your doctor if you have other health problems, especially:

• If you have or have had breast cancer, or if you are suspected of having the disease
• If you have cancer that is sensitive to estrogen, such as cancer of the lining of the uterus (endometrium), or if you are suspected of having the disease
• If you experience unexplained vaginal bleeding
• If you experience excessive thickening of the uterine lining (endometrial hyperplasia) that is not treated.
• If you have or have had blood clots in a vein (thrombosis), such as in your leg (deep vein thrombosis) or your lungs (pulmonary embolism)
• If you have a blood clotting disorder (such as protein C, protein S, or an antithrombin deficiency)
• If you have or have recently had a disease caused by blood clots in the arteries, such as a heart attack, stroke or angina
• If you have or have ever had liver disease and your liver function tests have not returned to normal
• If you have a rare blood problem called “porphyria” that runs in your family (inheritance).

If you take a dose of Livial more than you should, you may feel sick, or experience vaginal bleeding.

What should I do if I forget to take medicine or forget to take medicine?

If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
