What is the drug Thiopronine used for?

Thiopronine is a drug used to prevent kidney stones in patients with certain inherited disorders (cystinuria). Cystinuria occurs when too much of a certain natural substance (the amino acid cystine) is in the urine, leading to the formation of kidney stones. Thiopronine works by making cystine more soluble in urine.

This medication is usually used only if other methods have not been successful in preventing kidney stones (for example, drinking lots of water, alkaline therapy, special diets) or the patient is unable to use the common medication (d-penicillamine) for cystinuria.

What are the rules for using the Thiopronine drug?

Take this medication 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating, usually 3 times daily or as directed by your doctor.

Continue to drink plenty of water (for example, 2 glasses of water at every meal, before bed, and at night) and when taking alkaline medications (for example, potassium citrate) as directed by your doctor. Follow the diet recommended by your doctor well.

Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. In children, dosage is also based on body weight.

Use it regularly to get the full benefits of this medicine. To help you remember, use it at the same time every day.

How to store Thiopronine?

Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.

What should be considered before using the drug Thiopronine?

Do not use thiopronine if:

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients in thiopronine
• You are breastfeeding
• You have a history of anemia, low white blood cell count, or low platelet count that results from taking thiopronine

Several medical conditions can interact with thiopronine. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following occur to you:

Side effects

What are the possible side effects of Thiopronine?

A decrease in the ability to feel / smell, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects don't improve or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist right away.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefits to you outweigh the risk of side effects. Many people using this drug do not experience serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: signs of infection (eg, fever, persistent sore throat), muscle / joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, wrinkling / thinning of skin, fatigue, heartbeat rapid / pounding, easy bruising / bleeding, coughing up blood, change in the amount of urine, painful urination, dark / bloody urine, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, seizures, numbness / tingling in the arms / legs.

Tell your doctor right away if any of the rare but very serious side effects occur: yellowing of the skin / eyes, persistent nausea / vomiting, severe stomach pain.

Very serious allergic reactions to this drug are rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any of the symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching / swelling (especially face / tongue / throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Not everyone experiences the following side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have concerns about certain side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Drug Interactions

What drugs can interfere with the drug Thyopronine?

Although certain drugs should not be used at the same time, in other cases two different drugs can be used together even if interactions are possible. In this case, your doctor may be able to change the dose or take other precautions that may be needed. Tell your health care professional if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs on the market.

Can certain foods and drinks interfere with the action of thiopronine drugs?

Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider.

What health conditions can interfere with the performance of the drug Thiopronine?

The presence of other health problems in your body may affect the use of this drug. Tell your doctor if you have other health problems, such as:

Thiopronine tablets to prevent kidney stones

Children up to 9 years: Dose must be determined by your doctor.

Children 9 years and older: Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The usual dose for initial use is 15 mg per kilogram (kg) (6.8 mg per pound) of body weight per day, divided into three doses. Your doctor can change your dose if needed.

What to do in an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (118/119) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.

What should I do if I forget to take medicine or forget to take medicine?

If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
