Functions & Usage
What is the drug Trifluridine used for?
Trifluridine is a drug used to treat eye herpes infections. Herpes is a virus that resides quietly in the body, and will only show symptoms if there is an external trigger.
Trifluridine is not a cure for infection, but treatment of plague can speed healing of wounds / swelling in the eye and lower the risk of complications (eg, loss of vision).
OTHER USES: This section contains uses of this drug that are not listed on the label of any drug approved by a health care professional, but may be prescribed by your healthcare professional. Use this medication for the conditions listed in this section if only it has been prescribed by your healthcare professional.
This medication can also be used to treat other eye infections caused by a virus (for example, vaccinia virus infection).
How do you use the drug Trifluridine?
To apply eye drops, wash your hands first. To avoid contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper or let it touch your eye or other surface.
Tilt your head back, look up, and gently pull the lower eyelid with your ring finger to create a pocket. Place the tip of the dropper directly over your eye and place 1 drop into the eye bag as directed by your doctor. Look down and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger on the corner of your eye (near your nose) and press gently. This will prevent the medication from flowing out and drying out. Try not to blink and don't rub your eyes. Repeat this step for your other eye if directed.
Do not rinse the dropper. Change the cap after use.
This medication is usually used every 2 hours while awake until the eye has healed. Do not apply more than 9 drops to the eye within a 24 hour period. After healing, use this medication for 7 days, usually every 4 hours while awake (at least 5 drops per day) or as directed by your doctor.
If you are using any other type of eye medicine (for example, drops or ointment), wait at least 5 to 10 minutes before applying any other medicine. Use the eye drops first before the eye ointment to allow the drops to enter the eye.
Use it regularly to get the full benefits of this medicine. To help you remember, use it at the same time every day. Continue to use this medication for the prescribed time. Stopping treatment too early can result in the infection returning.
Do not use this medicine more often or use it for longer than prescribed because doing so can increase the risk of side effects. This medicine should not be used for more than 21 days..
Tell your doctor if your condition gets worse, doesn't get better after 7 days, or doesn't really get better after 14 days.
Follow the rules given by your doctor or pharmacist before starting treatment. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
