Not only is a change in skin color a sign of a problematic health condition, but eye color can also indicate certain health conditions. Rachel Bishop MD, a head of consultancy at the National Eye Institute, states that more than one gene forms or affects the color of a person's eyeballs. Well, the combination of these genes can basically determine and increase health risks in humans, depending on the color of the eyes they have. What are the risks? Check out the discussion below.
Different eye colors, different conditions and health risks of a person
1. Black or dark eyes are prone to cataracts
Cataract is a condition in which a cloudy layer appears above the pupil of the eye, which makes vision blurry. To make matters worse, a study published in the American Journal of Ophthamology in 2000 found that people who have dark eyes tend to be at risk of developing cataracts 1 to 2 times more. Therefore, it is important to protect the eyes from ultraviolet rays to prevent cataracts from appearing.
2. Blue eyes rarely get vitiligo
A review of research from the journal Nature, states that people with blue eyes are rarely affected or less common for vitiligo. Of the nearly 3,000 vitiligo patients who were all white in this study, it was found that 27% had blue eyes, 30% had green or hazel eyes, and at most 43% had brown eyes.
3. Dark eye color tends to be sensitive to alcohol
If you have dark eyes, which are brown or black, you may not like drinking alcoholic beverages. Why is that? Research published by Personality and Individual Differences in 2001 states that alcohol is more often consumed in people who have bright eye-colored eyes (such as blue, green or purple). They concluded that it is possible that dark-eyed people are more sensitive to alcohol and other drugs.
4. Women with lighter eye color are better able to withstand pain
In research published from the American Pain Society in 2014 by anesthesiology professor Inna Belfer, MD, PhD, the findings suggest that women whose eyeballs are light-colored are more likely to be able to withstand pain than dark-eyed women.
Researchers studied a small group of women before and after childbirth. The results were obtained, if women with dark eyes tend to show more anxiety and sleep disturbances in response to pain. Dark-eyed women also experienced greater pain relief after receiving an epidural, which indicates that they are indeed sensitive to pain.
5. Changing eye color indicates something is wrong in the body
If you notice redness on the whites of your eyes, it could be a sign that you have an undiagnosed or undiagnosed allergy. Meanwhile, if the whites of your eyes are yellow, you may have liver problems. Then, if one of your eye colors changes, it could be due to an inherited disease such as neurofibromatosis, which attacks nerve tissue tumors and can even cause melanome in the iris of the eye.
