Excessive work, whether because of overtime or intending to pay off work for the next day, can be dangerous for your health and happiness. The conclusion that overwork is dangerous is based on a study by Malissa Clark, Ph.D. and his team from the University of Georgia, United States in 2014.
Reported by Mens Health, there are several health problems that arise from overwork, such as stress, lethargy, depression, physical weakness, and conflicts in the world of work.
Two serious risks for overworked people
Cardiologist and Medical Director of the Heart Rhythm Service from Salt Lake City, Utah, Dr. John Day, said on his personal website, there are two risks that will be felt by people who work excessively, namely the risk of heart attack and stroke. Dr. John explained the two risks based on a study published in The Lancet in mid-2015.
Heart attack
A study was conducted, involving 603,838 people from the United States, Europe, and Australia. They were studied for about 8.5 years and the researchers found heart attack risk increased 13% in people who worked more than 55 hours a week.
However, the figure that came out of the study published in The Lancet was smaller than previous research published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2012, where the risk of heart attack could be up to 80% in people who worked 40 hours a week.
Stroke
In the same study from The Lancet, Dr. John explained that the risk of stroke is much higher in people who work too much. This study shows a person's risk of having a stroke increases 33% in people who work more than 55 hours a week. Even the risk of having a stroke also increases in people who work about 40 hours a week.
5 reasons why overtime is dangerous
Dr. John said, before in the end someone who is overworked has a heart attack and stroke, there are several reasons that trigger both risks.
1. Stress levels increase due to long working hours
“I have learned that when I work too long in the hospital, I feel more stressed. Studies show that stress alone can increase our risk of having a heart attack or stroke by up to 40%, ”said Dr. John in writing on his website.
2. Excessive work increases blood pressure
Whether it's work related or because of the fact that we don't have time to live a healthy lifestyle, overwork raises our blood pressure. Unfortunately, the risk is twice as high when you work too much or too long.
3. Overwork leads to overeating and lack of exercise
Naturally, if we work too long in the office we will eat more, especially when there are office friends who bring food or snacks. Time for exercise is also little. In addition, in a medical study, people who worked too long, their diet usually tended to be less healthy.
4. Diabetes risk threatens workaholic
Due to unhealthy food choices at work, someone who is often overworked, aka a workaholic, is more at risk of developing diabetes. Diabetes is one of the strongest risk factors for not only heart attack and stroke, but also dementia or dementia.
5. Long working hours lead to depression
Even though some people thrive and enjoy long working hours, many people feel unhappy when work dominates their lives. Long or long working hours can increase a person's chances of suffering from depression. Depression itself is a strong risk factor for heart disease.
