Dimples are often seen as a facial feature that adds attractiveness. Unfortunately, not everyone is born blessed with dimmed cheeks. Maybe that's why enough people are tempted to undergo dimple surgery, aka dimple embroidery to make it look more attractive. However, how safe is this procedure?
What are dimples?
Dimples are the indentations that appear on the cheeks when someone smiles. Generally, dimples are often located on the lower cheek near the lips.
Not everyone is born with dimples. Dimples form naturally as a result of the indentation in the dermis (middle layer of the skin) because the facial muscles bend more deeply when the mouth is drawn to a smile. Another cause of dimple appearance may be an injury.
Dimples are often seen as a beautiful facial feature. Beyond aesthetics, dimples are even thought to bring good luck in some world cultures.
Due to this, the number of requests for dimple or dimple embroidery surgeries has increased dramatically in recent years.
How to do a dimple embroidery or surgery?
Dimple surgery, referred to as dimple plasty, can be done in a hospital or beauty clinic. This surgery includes minor outpatient plastic surgery. You can immediately perform and complete this procedure without needing to be hospitalized.
You may also not need to be under general anesthesia to have dimple surgery. The cosmetic surgeon will first apply a local anesthetic such as lidocaine to the area of the skin around the cheeks. Generally, you need to wait about 10 minutes for the anesthetic to take effect.
Then the doctor will use a small biopsy tool to manually make a hole in the skin of your cheek to start the dimple. After that the doctor will lift a little muscle and fat on the cheeks to create a more natural and symmetrical curve. The depth of the indentation hole will be approximately 2-3 millimeters.
When you are done making space for the dimples on the cheeks, the doctor will then sew from one side of the cheek muscles to the other. This stitch will lastly be tied to permanently fix the dimple.
You can go straight home afterwards.
How long is the recovery time?
Recovery from surgery or a doctor's dimple embroidery is usually short-lived and relatively easy.
The side of the embroidered face may be slightly swollen after surgery. However, you can apply a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Usually the swelling will go away on its own within the next few days.
The surgeon may schedule a consultation session a few weeks after the operation to observe the results.
Are there any risks or complications from dimple surgery?
The risks and complications following dimple surgery at a trusted surgeon are generally rare. Possible serious risks can occur if you do dimple embroidery at any salon or clinic that is not an expert.
Some of the risks or complications that may occur include:
- Bleeding at the site of the dimple or the surgical suture marks
- Facial nerve damage
- Redness and swelling
- Infection
- Scar tissue
If you experience bleeding or discharge in the area of the surgery, see a doctor immediately. This is probably a sign that you have an infection. The earlier the infection is treated, the less likely it will spread to the bloodstream which can lead to further complications.
