Some men may have a curved penis, which is a penis that curves sideways, up, or down when in a normal position. This is common, and penile curvature in most men is not a problem. However, can this condition be corrected so that the penis is straight as usual? Find out the answer below.
Crooked penis, what is it?
Generally, men who have a curved penis are just worried about having a painful erection or that it will interfere with sex with their partner.
When a man is sexually aroused or has an erection, the main blood vessels in the penis enlarge to allow for an increase in blood pressure in the penis and get trapped in the arteries so that the penis tightens and hardens.
Curvature of the penis is common in this condition. This is due to the asymmetric nature of the human body.
In some cases, the curvature of the penis when tightened can be so extreme that it can hurt during penetration, or it may make it difficult to get an erection. This condition of a bent penis that is too extreme is known as Peyronie's disease.
Peyronie's disease is a problem with the penis caused by scar tissue, or plaque, that forms inside the penis.
You're more at risk for Peyronie's if you have a genetic disorder that was passed on from your parents, injured your penis during sex or from surgery, or as a side effect of prostate cancer radiation therapy.
A bent penis usually doesn't require treatment. However, if you have a very crooked penis that causes pain or irritation during sex, see your doctor right away.
How to care for and repair it?
The penis can be straight back with several treatments as recommended by the doctor. However, this condition will actually get better over time, so you don't really need treatment.
Usually doctors will advise you to wait 1-2 years or more before they try to cure it. Doctors will recommend this if:
- The curvature of the penis is not severe and is not getting worse.
- Can still have erections and have sex without or with little pain.
- Have a good erectile function.
If your symptoms are severe or get worse over time, your doctor will consider medication or surgery to treat them.
First, your doctor may prescribe an oral medication such as pentoxifylline or potassium para-aminobenzoate (Potaba).
If that doesn't work, you may get an injection of verapamil or collagenase (Xiaflex) into the scar tissue of the penis. If this doesn't work either, the doctor may perform surgery.
However, this surgery will only be performed for men who are unable to have sex because of Peyronie's disease.
Surgery is usually not recommended until you have had this condition for at least a year. It could also be because you have had a curved penis that has gotten worse or has not gotten better for at least six months.
There are several surgical procedures that are generally performed, namely:
- Sewing the longer side of the penis (the side without scar tissue). However, this procedure can shorten the penis, and in some cases can cause erectile dysfunction.
- Incision or excision and transplant. This procedure is used for more severe cases of penile curvature.
- Penile implant. Implants that are injected to replace the tissue that fills with blood during an erection. This procedure is usually performed for men who have Peyrone's disease and erectile dysfunction.
The type of surgery to be performed depends on your condition. Your doctor will consider the location of the scar tissue, the severity of the symptoms, and other factors. If you are uncircumcised, your doctor may recommend circumcision during surgery.
