Activities outside the home allow the body to produce excessive sweating. The armpits are one of the areas of the body that sweat the most. Apart from being uncomfortable, excessive sweating can also trigger body odor. However, there's no need to worry. When used properly, deodorants can be counted on to solve this problem.

Is it correct to use your deodorant?

Deodorant is not only applied to the skin of the armpits. In order for the deodorant product to work optimally, it is important to know how to use it.

When met by the Hello Sehat Team at the deodorant product launch event in Menteng on Thursday (11/7), dr. Melyawati Hermawan, Sp.KK, explained how to use the correct deodorant.

According to dr. Melyawati, here are some things that need to be considered when using deodorant products.

1. Avoid products that contain fragrances

It is commonplace that we tend to choose deodorant products that smell good. However, regardless of the aroma variant, perfume or fragrance added to deodorant products can actually trigger irritation. Especially for those of you who have sensitive skin.

Doctor Melyawati who practices at Siloam Hospital Kebun Jeruk also agrees with this statement.

"Based on existing research, fragrances and fragrances most often cause irritation on the skin. If people with sensitive skin use products that contain too strong a perfume, their skin will get irritated very easily, ”explained dr. Melyawati.

For those with sensitive skin, fragrances derived from essential oils can also trigger irritation on their skin.

Therefore, it is important for people with sensitive skin to avoid self-care products that contain fragrances.

2. Wear deodorant at night

Are you one of those people who have a habit of using deodorant in the morning before doing activities? In fact, the way to use this deodorant isn't quite right. Experts actually recommend using deodorant at night.

Why? You see, the sweat ducts in your armpits are like an alley. During the day, this alley tends to be filled with various vehicles and the hustle and bustle of the people around it.

It's the same when you use deodorant products in the morning or afternoon. Sweat production which tends to be more during the day makes deodorant products ineffective at blocking the sweat gland ducts. This is why applying deodorant at night is an effective way to reap its benefits.

"At night we tend to be calmer. No physical activity like climbing stairs or all kinds. This makes the sweat duct more clear so that the deodorant product can get into the sweat glands deeper. That way the sweat gland production the next day does not reach the surface of the skin because there is already a deodorant product that clogs it, "said dr. Melyawati.

3. Always check the ingredients

There is a huge selection of deodorant products sold in stores. However, have you ever really understood what the ingredients are in these products?

Without realizing it, a number of ingredients contained in deodorant products can trigger an irritation reaction on the surface of the underarm skin. The irritation reaction also tends to be different for each person.

Starting from a burning sensation, itching, redness, blackened underarm skin and so on. For people who have sensitive skin, this certainly shouldn't be underestimated.

If you have sensitive skin, it's important to avoid chemicals that can trigger irritation. According to dr. Melyawati, a number of ingredients that can trigger irritation reactions on sensitive skin include:

  • Alcohol
  • Parabens
  • Propylene glycol
  • Fragrance derived from natural oils

So, don't just get busy choosing the brand of deodorant product. Make sure you also always look at the chemical composition contained in it.

By using the right deodorant products, your armpits will feel more comfortable. You will also have more freedom to carry out various daily activities.

4. Make sure to use deodorant when the skin is dry

Usually, people will use deodorant after showering, while the underarm skin is still damp. In fact, it shouldn't be.

Dr. Melyawati explained that using deodorant is best when the underarm skin is really dry. "If the deodorant product is mixed with water, it will form a substance that can actually trigger irritation," concluded the doctor who is also a member of the Association of Indonesian Dermatology and Venereology Specialists Jakarta (PERDOSKI Jaya).

That is why, in order for your deodorant product to work optimally, make sure you apply it when the underarm skin is completely dry.
