You can also use a gastric balloon, but a gastric balloon can only last up to 9 months.

Process

What should I do before having surgery?

Talk to your doctor about any medications you are currently taking, allergies, or other health conditions before having surgery. Before surgery, schedule an appointment with your anesthetist. It is important that you follow your doctor's instructions to stop eating or drinking before surgery.

You will be given preoperative instructions, such as whether you are allowed to eat before the operation. In general, you will need to fast 6 hours before the procedure begins. You may be allowed to drink fluids, such as coffee, a few hours before the surgery.

What is the gastric banding process?

The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts for about 1 to 2 hours.

The surgeon will make several small incisions in the abdomen. Equipment such as a telescope will be inserted into the stomach for surgery.

The surgeon will make access to the back of your stomach. The bracelet will be wrapped around the top of the stomach to make the top pocket shrink. The surgeon will usually fold the lower part of the stomach and sew it into the upper gastric sac.

You can only consume fluids for 1 week, then slowly consume refined foods, then after 4 to 6 weeks you can eat solid foods.
