Uses
What is insulin degludec for?
Degludec insulin is insulin long-acting artificial (recombinant DNA) which helps the body's cells work in capturing insulin. The use of this drug is intended for patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus for one year or more to improve glycemic control in themselves. This drug has the same pharmacological effects as the natural insulin produced by the human body. Its use is not recommended for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis and pediatric patients who need less than five units of this insulin.
Degludec insulin lowers blood sugar levels by stimulating the absorption of sugar concentrations in the peripheral areas and adipose tissue. That way, glucose can enter the body's cells and can be used as energy. This insulin injection will also inhibit the sugar production process carried out by the liver and increase protein synthesis.
Rules for using insulin degludec
This drug is used by injection in the subcutaneous tissue, injected into the fat tissue just below the outer layer of skin. Before giving the injection, always clean the area to be injected with alcohol. Do not inject insulin degludec in the same place continuously. Change the injection area to prevent problems under the skin layer (lipodystrophy).
Giving insulin injections can not only be done in the abdominal area. Injection can also be done in the thigh or upper arm area. Do not inject directly into a vein as this can cause hypoglycemia.
The use of insulin degludec can be combined (but do not mix or dissolve it together) with the use of insulin injections short-acting as well as. This drug can also be used as monotherapy. This insulin can also be combined with the use of oral diabetes drugs to provide optimal results. Do not inject insulin when cold as this can be very painful.
Most importantly, remember to always read the instructions for use that are on the label carefully. Also consult with the doctor who treats you to avoid unnecessary side effects.
How to store insulin degludec
The best way to store all unopened insulin products is in the refrigerator at a temperature of 2-8 degrees Celsius. Unopened insulin can be stored at room temperature, but do not use it after 56 days. For insulin that has been opened or that is still left in the needle / syringe, treat it the same way with unopened insulin.
Store at a temperature of 2-8 degrees Celsius or below 30 degrees Celsius, for a maximum of 56 days. Keep insulin out of reach of children, heat, and direct sunlight. Also avoid places that have high humidity for storage.
Overdose
What should I do in an emergency or overdose?
If you experience any emergency problems after taking this insulin injection, seek emergency medical help immediately (119) or the nearest hospital emergency department. One of the signs of an overdose caused by this drug is fainting, cold sweat, and shaking due to hypoglycemia. Perform first aid by providing food or drinks that contain sugar.
In some cases of hypoglycemia, first aid includes administration of glucagon through the subcutaneous layer (0.5-1 mg) or administration of glucose intravenously if the patient is unconscious after 10-15 minutes.
What should I do if I miss the injection?
It is very important to stick to your exact insulin schedule. If you miss a dose, talk to your doctor about what you should do. Ensure that insulin administration is within eight hours of the next dose.
